Automotive Journalist

Since its birth in 2008, Volvo treated the XC60 as a foster child for almost a decade. But now after a cut-throat competition in the segment, Volvo has also become more focussed on giving its rivals a run for their money. The 2020 model brings in a lot of promising numbers and does not stop to impress you while you are actually driving it, with its utilitarian nature and day-to-day practicality.

Though the XC60 lets you down on the price front as it is the most expensive car in the segment but you do get the biggest engine as well, leashing out 400 HP and the second-best being the Audi that produces 349 HP.

What do we recommend

The 2020 XC60 is worth every single penny of your hard earned money no matter which trim you select. But considering all the factors, the Inscription model is what would make the best choice because you can also add any of the customization packs and still it will be less than the top of the line model and would still be powerful enough to take down your rivals or take you to your office in an effortless drive.

2020 Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid SUV Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The XC60 is equipped with a 2.0L Inline 4 Cylinder Twin charged engine along with a 11.6 kWh battery to boost up another 75 horses along with the 325 HP generated by the turbine. The power is sent to all the 4 wheels by a sophisticated 8-Speed automatic transmission. The combo together generates a ground shaking 475 lb-ft of torque @ 2200 Revs. This beast is further revamped for the top-of-the-line Polestar Engineered trim to take these numbers further to a mind boggling 415hp and 494 lb-ft of torque.

As compared to its rivals, the Volvo goes way past ahead in terms of power, breathing out 400 horses. The second in the segment remains Audi in terms of power i.e. 349 HP. The Mercedes Benz GLC 300 on the other hand is the segment topper in terms of torques i.e. 516 lb-ft as compared to the XC60’s 472 lb-ft. These numbers will surely give you the clear picture of the complete segment and if you are a power junky, the Volvo certainly is the car for you.

How Fast is the XC60 Hybrid

The holy combination of the Electric motor and the gas turbine, launches the Volvo from a standstill to 62 MPH in a mind boggling 5 seconds flat. Though the monster underneath that hood is just a 2.0L Inline 4 cylinder block, but firstly it gets a turbocharger, then it gets a supercharger and when the Swedish thought that these were not really enough, they added an 11.6 kWh battery to it which adds another 75 HP to the grunt.

When compared to its rivals, the Volvo locks its horns with the Audi Q5 PHEV 55 Prestige TFSI in a sprint from nought to 60 at 5 seconds flat and rounds up all the Germans in the bag by its top speed of 143 MPH as compared to the 130 MPH of all the others.

XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Regenerative Braking

The XC60 Hybrid like all the PHEV’s comes equipped with the Regenerative Braking system. For those who are curious about what exactly regenerative braking is, it is a mechanism that extracts the kinetic energy produced while braking and then uses it to charge the battery packs while on the move. This helps the vehicle to create power reserves and also keeps the battery pack charged while you are on the move.

When it comes to Germans, the Mercedes Benz gets the biggest disc sizes in the segment and is actually one of the lightest as well. But as the exact figures have not been revealed yet, it's a bit difficult to compare them. However, the brakes on the XC60 do feel confident and the nosedive has been reduced to a very low level in case of emergency or hard braking.

XC60 Hybrid Handling

Handling is a territory where the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid really aces over its rivals. Though the looks might suggest otherwise, the Volvo is very composed when you bash it around the corners. The dynamic chassis control system accents the suspensions of the vehicle. The car feels nimble at all times, be it a city drive or a highway cruise.

2020 Volvo XC60 plug-in-hybrid SUV's Rear View

The XC60 gets a double wishbone suspension with anti roll bars in the front wheels which is tuned in a way that in comfort settings, you really feel the serenity of a luxury class vehicle. The electric motor gives you an immediate response as soon as you put the pedal to the metal and the pull is relentless throughout the range, all thanks to its sophisticated 8-speed automatic transmission which is standard throughout the line-up.

The power is sent to all four wheels so you always get the sense of control over the beast. However, the R-design and the Polestar Engineered trims are more performance oriented, the chassis feels a lot more stiffer and still holds your back when you are really pushing the car to its limits.

2020 Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid SUV Fuel Economy

8.0/10

In terms of fuel economy, the XC60 hybrid may not be the most fuel efficient car on the market but does stand tall in its segment. The Swedish wizzes have tuned the 2.0L twin-charged hybrid engine for ultimate performance and also squeeze the maximum mileage possible. The 11.6 kWh motor stand alone can do a whopping 58 miles on a single charge alone which is actually the second best in the segment.

As compared to its rivals, the XC60 is the second best car in terms of Fuel economy. On the top of the podium is the Audi Q5 PHEV with averaging much more in the city drive and a good support from the battery as well. However, the Volvo also has one more ace hidden up its sleeve and that is the fuel capacity. The Volvo comes with a big diet i.e. 18.5 Gallons as compared to 17.2 of the BMW being the second one. That means, you do lose 1 mile per gallon in mileage but you can take much more fuel and thus reduce the stops at the filling station.

2020 Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid SUV Interior

9.0/10

The interiors of the XC60 is a serene and a peaceful place to be, after a long day of work. The quality of materials used is solid and gives you a feeling of highest standards. The seats are well-bolstered and as you would expect of a premium luxury vehicle, there are no rattles or creeks on the inside. All the 5 passengers can be ferried even on a long haul with extreme comforts.

When compared to its rivals, the XC60’s sweeping body line does rob a little headroom but you do get the maximum leg room in the segment. The Audi Q5 PHEV is the closest rival to the Volvo in all the parameters. But ultimately Volvo does ace over the German in many fields.

The Volvo whilst providing you with the best quality of interiors, also has a big arsonal of features. Some of the most prominent of them are as follows:

  • 2-Zone Automatic Climate Control with CleanZone
  • Tinted windows, rear side doors, and cargo area
  • Panoramic Roof w/ Power Sunshade
  • Heated and Ventilated front seats with Comfort Seat Padding
  • Power Front Seats w/ Driver and Passenger Seat Memory
  • 4-way power-adjustable lumbar support
  • Electric Folding Rear Headrests (Outer Positions)
  • Illuminated Mirrors in Sun Visors
  • Interior illumination high level

XC60 Hybrid Infotainment Features

While giving you the most premium quality of interiors, the Swedish also keep you updated on the tech front. Equipped with all the modern features, the XC60 flaunts a 9-inch center display touch screen which has a portrait layout instead of the conventional landscape layout. To make the interiors clean, the use of buttons has been reduced to a very minimum. The touch is responsive and once you get used to it, you won’t need to even look at it while operating.

The vehicle comes equipped with a Harmon Kardon 14 speaker system as standard but if you are even a bigger music buff, you can surely go for the optional 15-speaker Bowers and Wilkins setup as well.

Some of the main features can be listed as follows:

  • 12.3-inch Digital Driver Display
  • 9-inch Touchscreen Infotainment Screen
  • 14-speaker Harman Kardon Premium Sound System
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Integration
  • Bluetooth and Voice Control
  • 12V Power Outlet in Luggage Area
  • 2 USB connections (+1 AUX up to 17w16)

XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Boot Storage

The XC60 while being the best for comfort of its passengers, also plays a very practical role as a daily companion. The vehicle gets a massive boot and because of a well planned body design, is the biggest in the segment. At the same time, you can also drop the rear seats down for even a more massive storage.

2020 Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid SUV Exterior

After being acquired by the Geely Holdings, the Volvo’s have changed their image from being an Old Professor’s car to being a confident new luxury brand that will not let its rivals go easy. With its confident stance and some extraordinary features like the Thor Hammer Headlamps, give the Volvo a great road presence.

2020 Volvo XC60 plug-in-hybrid SUV Three Quarter View

As you change the trim, you get a choice between a luxury outlook or a devilish sporty trait in its design features. While keeping you ahead in the game in terms of performance, the Volvo also outdoes its rivals with its fresh new looks and looks more updated with the time.

It's easy to say that the Volvo’s do not belong to the old times where they had those boxy looks. The new Volvo brings in a new era of modern day practicality and with such beautiful looks, turns the heads at least once with its sheer beauty and road presence.

2020 Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid SUV Safety

The Volvo always had the best safety records from day one and as the new technology evolves, new safety features also get added up in that old log book. Though the new 2020 XC60 Plug-in Hybrid has not been crash tested by the authorities yet, the 2019 model was awarded the Top Safety Pick Award by IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). You can also get the idea by the following list of features that are incorporated in the car.

  • Park Assist for front and Rear
  • Park Assist Camera
  • Anti-Theft and Vandalism Alarm
  • HomeLink
  • Power Locking with Child locks
  • Collision Mitigation Support, front, and rear
  • Lane Keeping Aid
  • Blind Spot Information System and Cross Traffic Alert
  • Front and Rear Collision Mitigation support
  • Hill-start assist with Hill Descent Control

The safety of the people inside and outside of the car is one of the top priorities on the list of Volvo. And rest assured, the checkbox has been ticked in a big green color.

2020 Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid SUV Competition

Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Vs Audi Q5 PHEV

When it was launched back in 2008, the Germans never had to even worry about what kind of competitions they had except themselves, but now the story has changed drastically and the Swedish are back in the game with a bang. But the Germans also don’t let them go that easy. The Audi Q5 PHEV, with its compact size and aggressive looks, almost the same performance, does win a lot of hearts. Don’t even think for a minute that the rivals let them go easy.

2020 Audi Q5 PHEV

Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Vs Mercedes Benz GLC 300 PHEV

The Germans have been in the game for a longer time than anybody else. They really know what they are doing. The Mercedes, on the other hand, has a very bold image for reliability and is very decently priced in the segment, giving it a very superior value for money as compared to the Volvo.

2020 Mercedes Benz GLC 300 PHEV

2020 Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid SUV Final Verdict

8.9/10

The all new XC60 Plug-in Hybrid is a brilliant car that has many personalities combined in a single package. With its practicality, performance and easy to use nature, it surely provides a true value for your money. The looks have been updated and the vehicle gets a really great road presence. Plus, the massive boot, ultimate safety features and a perky engine make the Volvo a perfect family car that can be used equally in the city and the highways. Plus you get so many optional features that you can really get the Volvo customized from the dealership to your specific taste and do not need to make any compromises. All-in-all, if you have a family of 4 or 5, this is an ideal car for your daily usage and weekend getaways.
