Overall Rating

Powering the Land Cruiser is a 5.7L V8 engine producing 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. Toyota has priced the Land Cruiser at $85,315. Same as before, Toyota fits only one engine to its Land Cruiser.  The V-8 sends power to all the four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission which helps pulls this 5,800-pound SUV with ease.

The SUV competes with the likes of Lincoln Navigator L, Lexus LX 570, and Cadillac Escalade ESV. The sports utility vehicle from Toyota easily outlasts the competition by means of powerful performance and superior off-road competency.

We Recommend

2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Engine and Performance

6.5/10

The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser is powered by a 5.7L V8 powerhouse which chucks out 381 horses and 401lb-ft of torque. Power is transmitted via an 8-Speed wizardry to all 4 wheels which helps the Landcruiser to crawl literally on any terrain. With a price tag of $85315, it is not the cheapest SUV out there. It does justify the price tag with exceptional offroading capabilities and an ever so comfortable interior.

What's under the hood of Toyota Land Cruiser?

The Lincoln Navigator L is the most powerful of the lot, courtesy of its twin-turbocharged 3.5L V6. The 10-speed gearbox helps in transmitting the power. But the ride is much more jerky because of the twin turbo setup which has an irregular power delivery cycle. All the others have a linear setup which makes them tamable.

How quick is it up the hill?

The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser in spite of weighing close to two tonnes, crosses the 60 miles mark in 6.8 seconds which is very impressive.

With a quarter-mile of 15.1 seconds, this is a pretty quick SUV. The 8-speed transmission is programmed to upshift prematurely for increased fuel economy.

The Lighter Lexus LX 570 gets to the 60 mark a lot slower with a time of 7.3 seconds. This shows the efficient power delivery of the Land Cruiser which makes it superior in speedruns.

How is the driving dynamics of the Toyota?

Toyota has always given extra focus on driving dynamics. The Land Cruiser is not an exception as well. The body is attached to a ladder frame which is ideal for a no-nonsense SUV. The rear has a solid axle and independent suspension at the front. The steering is light which helps in moving the huge Toyota with ease. Standard tires provide a good grip but the suspension is on the softer side. This makes curvy roads uncomfortable.

Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System makes the ride comfortable on highways but it excels on uneven terrains where it’s meant to be. This system utilizes anti-roll bars which disconnects at lower speeds for more wheel travel depending on the terrain.

How effective are the brakes?

The Toyota Land Cruiser has enough stopping power to bring the 2-tonner to a stop from 60 mph in 121 ft. . It has ABS-equipped Disc brakes all around with a rotor diameter of 13.9 inches at front and 13.6 inches at the rear.

It offers a decent bite and instills confidence when offroading.

2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Fuel Economy

The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser weighs around 5,800-pounds which means the fuel economy is awful. It checks in at 13mpg city, 17 mpg highway and 14 mpg combined. Honestly, these numbers are not bad considering its mass but that also makes it one of the least fuel-efficient vehicles in the segment. Although there has been multiple tweaks done to the transmission to shift early in order to provide better efficiency.

2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Interior

8.0/10

The interior of the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser doesn’t mimic its functionality. It is rather comfortable and luxurious when compared to other SUVs. It has a host of driver and passenger-friendly features to cocoon them in comfort while it devours various terrains!

How cozy is it on the inside?

The Land Cruiser is a 8-seater with three rows of seats. The first and second rows are comfortable and spacious but the third one is only good for kids.

The seats are upholstered with semi-aniline leather and wooden trims are added into the dashboard. It makes sure that its occupants are comfortable while it climbs mountains.

The Land Cruiser is not the spacious of the lot, but it makes up for it with the exceptionally luxurious interiors and clever management of seats. The Cadillac Escalade wins here with plenty of interior space.

Is the Infotainment top-notch?

The Land Cruiser boasts of a 9-inch touch screen infotainment system couples with 14 JBL speakers including amplifier. It supports advanced voice recognition, hands-free Bluetooth and has Qi-compatible wireless smartphone and device charging.

How good is the cargo space?

The Land Cruiser provides 16.1 cubic feet of cargo space with all the three rows of seat up. This low volume is because of the addition of the third row and a compact wheelbase. This can be varied by folding the third and second row of seats when needed. This provides an adaptive cargo space which helps a lot when offroading.

An 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheel with mud-and-snow rated steel-belted radial tire is standard on the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser, which offers a smooth ride over most pavements and also helps the vehicle to move out of any sticky situation while off-roading. Thanks to Toyota for keeping things simple by not offering a giant wheel and tires which may appeal to the eye but compromises on the ride quality.

Exterior Features

The side view of the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser makes clear that it is an old-school SUV. The ride’s unique profile hasn’t changed much in the past 2 decades. Major exterior highlights of the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser include:

  • LED stop lights and light-pipe tail lights with vortex generators
  • 18-inch split-spoke alloy wheels with P285/60R18 116V tires
  • Privacy glass on rear side, quarter and liftgate windows

2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Competition

Toyota Land Cruiser Vs Lincoln Navigator L(Reserve)

The Lincoln Navigator ranks high in the full-size luxury SUV segment. The V-6 engine puts out more horsepower than most in the class, and it also has the highest towing capacity for a large luxury SUV. The Navigator also offers more space in all three rows than the Toyota Land Cruiser. The Navigator is priced $10,000 less than its Toyota rivals, but it is not an off-roader. If you seek adventure, go with the Land Cruiser; otherwise, Lincoln is a better value proportion.

Toyota Land Cruiser Vs Lexus LX570

The Lexus LX shares many of its characteristics with the Land Cruiser, though the LX costs a few thousand dollars more. There is only one trim to choose from in both these SUVs, along with a long list of standard features. Cargo capacity and mileage are equal as well. The only thing that separates them is the interior quality. Lexus provides a more lavish and comfortable interior than its elder cousin. However, Toyota is a more capable SUV with higher towing capacity and best in class off-roading ability.

2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Final Verdict

The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser is one of the most capable off-roading SUVs in the market. Toyota has kept things simple by not adding layers of the optional package as the Land Cruiser comes fully loaded with advanced techs and features. It offers a zesty V-8 engine and nimble handling despite its size.

The SUV is although marred by its fuel economy as it guzzles fuel like no other vehicle and is one of the least fuel-efficient cars in the class. The Land Rover Discovery makes a great choice as it offers similar off-roading capability along with the luxurious interior.
