2020 RAM 2500 Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: February 27, 2020

Automotive Journalist

The 2020 Ram 2500 is a heavy-duty truck with specifications suited for all the heavy-duty chores available to man. From towing to hauling anything a common man can earn, Ram can pull it all. 2500 is supposed to be the class-leading in its segment but lacks the numbers for it.

Starting at a price of $36,145, Ram is the cheapest truck in this segment. There are flexible trim options to choose from, Limited being the fully loaded one. The Power Wagon trim is built for extreme off-roading and gives a tough to Ford's Raptor as its ground clearance and a tough frame is something that Raptor lacks.

We Recommend

Since the base trims have nothing much to offer, it is not easy to recommend one. On the other hand, the Denali version is a very luxurious and capable car but comes with some big cash. So, in order to take this on one, we would recommend the SLT trim. This trim offers a handful of value-added features along with solid tech amenities. We also recommend you to upgrade to the performing 2.0-liter engine.

2020 RAM 2500 Engine and Performance

9.0/10

Ram 2500 is a powerful truck with some heavy-duty responsibilities to take care of. The 5.7L Hemi can take on heaviest tasks with ease and this heavy-duty truck was built for that. While being a heavy-duty truck this truck is equipped with a much smoother transmission.

The 5.7L Hemi V8 can produce 383hp of power and 400lb-ft of torque which might not be best-in-class but if you switch to the 6.7L Cummins engine variant, you get a thunderous 930lb-ft of best-in-class torque. Ram's competitors offer much better performance, Chevy's Silverado offers best-in-class torque figures with a much-refined engine.

Acceleration

These heavy-duty trucks are not very quick on their feet, they are like Japanese Sumo wrestlers. Even with that testosterone inducing built they are pretty quick. Ram reaches the 60mph mark in just 8.8 seconds which is pretty decent for this heavy bucket of bolts.

There are much quicker options to consider in this segment but you'll have to sacrifice a bit on hauling capacity and ruggedness. The quickest option to consider in this segment is the Nissan Titan XD which can reach the 60mph mark in just 6.0 seconds.

Ride & Handling

Ram can be as tough as a marine and smooth as a playboy model. The rear-coil spring suspension creates a perfect balance of stiffness and cloud-like comfort in Ram 2500. This coil suspension automatically adjusts itself according to road conditions and lowers itself when a heavy load is about to be hauled or towed.

Cursed with a vague steering response, Ram does not justify the heavy-duty tag it bears. There is a much visible body roll around corners which was due to the awkwardly muscular built.

Braking

These workhorses are loaded with some big brakes and these big brakes are essential if you want to all that torque and horsepower under your feet. The powerful anti-lock braking inside this Ram is pretty efficient and Ram does provide optional exhaust brakes that provide extra braking while towing heavy loads without damaging the brake pedals.

Off-roading Capabilities

The Big Ol' Power Wagon by Ram is a complete off-roader and winner of the  Gold-Hitch award. With front and rear locking differentials and best-in-class ground clearance, this Power Wagon can crawl through any terrain. Raptor and Chevy's Colorado ZR2 might be the lighter counterparts of Ram but Power Wagon tears through rocky terrain like a cowboy.

Raptor dominates the loose gravel terrain and even with a wider body and its exclusive "Rock Crawl" mode, Raptor is not as capable as Power Wagon in uphill rocky terrain. Weight of Power Wagon can become an issue while chewing through the rough terrain as the tires dig in around the soft mud.

2020 RAM 2500 Interior

Ram is equipped with a catchy interior which will give a lavish flavor to your work-truck. It might be a heavy-duty truck but with well-crafted interiors and a perfect seating position.

2020 RAM 2500 Regular Cab Front Seats

The suspension might be stiff but it offers much better comfort than any of its competitors. The seats are comfortable and prove perfect for touring and that long family drives.

Infotainment

Ram offers very little compared to its competitors but when it comes to interiors and specifically the infotainment it takes the baton from brands like Ford and Chevrolet. The 5-inch infotainment screen comes basic and offers a lot more than Ford can. The limited-edition is equipped with an 8.4inch infotainment which provides this heavy-duty truck with a different set of utility tools like voice-navigated maps.

Dimension & Weight

The heaviest in this segment, Ram 2500 finds itself with the shortest wheelbase too. Even with a rugged image, it carries Ram 2500 fails to impress us with its dimensions. The exterior design is what pulls most of the truck buyers towards it.

The bull shaped front-nose is something that has kept Ram alive in the pickup market for this long as it is difficult for Ram to keep up with Chevy's performance and Ford's reliability. Ram might be the heavy-duty pickup of Texas but deep down we all know that there are better options to consider.

Maximum Towing Capacity

There is much speculation about the towing capacity of a Ram truck and with the numbers fluctuating every year, this speculation is justified. This year, Ram carries a towing capacity of 11520lbs which is not the lowest but Nissan Titan is not what an average American truck buyer desires.

Pickup trucks are meant to provide better payload capacity and trucks like F-250 and Chevy's Silverado 2500HD are already dominating the payload aspect in a truck. Ram comes in as weak competitors to these heavy-duty vehicles.

2020 RAM 2500 Competition

Ram 2500 Tradesman Crew Cab vs Ford F-250 SuperDuty Crew Cab

The Ford F-250 is America's most loved heavy-duty truck and to give this truck competition you'd need some serious numbers and Ram lacks that. Ford's class-leading torque numbers and over 7 decades of the truck making experience keeps this heavy-duty truck on top of many buyers' priority list. F-250's interior might not gain much attention as Ram's but that is easily overpowered by Ford's hauling and towing capacity.

2020 Ford F-250 SuperDuty Crew Cab

Ram 2500 Tradesman Crew Cab vs Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab

Chevy's Silverado is one of the toughest competitions of Ram. Ram's 2500 lacks the number and punch that is required to keep up with Silverado. Silverado's hauling and towing capabilities combined with its muscular and bulky look give Ram a hard time. The interiors and a power-packed diesel variant are what is keeping Ram alive in this segment.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab

Ram 2500 Tradesman Crew Cab vs GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab

Built under the same manufacturer as Chevrolet, Sierra resembles Silverado in a lot of ways. They both share the same engine and performance specs also walk hand-in-hand. There one similarity that these two trucks share and that is they both are better than Ram's 2500.

2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab

2020 RAM 2500 Final Verdict

8.8/10

Apart from the Power Wagon trim and that badass front grille, Ram has very little that can actually excite a truck buyer. Ram stands next to its competitors but with lower specifications and with a lower price tag.

Ram 2500's off-road capabilities and cheap maintenance still make it a better option than any of its competitors. The on-paper Ram truck is pretty much different than the actual truck as it might a little low on numbers but easily satisfies its owners.
