2020 RAM 1500 Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: January 27, 2020

The brand with the strongest loyalty has come to stake a claim in the light truck market and 1500 really delivers on that front. having the best in class interiors and an engine that can give out the maximum torque whilst having the least amount of ponies under the hood. Ram 1500  is a truck with symmetrical dimensions and a perfectly designed nose. These trucks by Ram are one of the most trustworthy trucks available in the market with some unique features like five-link coil spring rear suspensions.

It sold close to half a million units last year thanks to its wide model base to fit everyone's needs. Aside from a few minor details, Ram has left 1500 mostly untouched, and we are all the more happy for it. The variety of exterior and interior features that add to the overall appeal are still there. The truck's utility hasn't diminished, either.

Expert Review

Overall Rating

Ram has 3 different models starting with a 1500 and goes up till the heavy-duty 3500 series. The Ram truck has plenty of options for every kind of buyer out there and the configurations choices are unlimited which makes the choice even more difficult.  Ram comes with 3 engine options. The most common engine used in the RAM is 5.7 Liter HEMI V8 producing 395 horsepower with 410-pound feet of torque and it’s standard on all but Laramie model comes with a 3.6 Liter Pentastar V6 which makes a healthy 305 horsepower and 269-pound feet of torque.

Still, the full-size pickup segment is constantly evolving. So is the competition for the Ram 1500. The F-150 is a pickup truck that has received updates regularly. Even Chevrolet has stepped up the game with the Silverado. Taking cues from the past, the Silverado 1500 is well on its way to regaining the glory of its forefathers. With such a formidable opposition in its way, it would seem that the Ram 1500 would have a tough time proving its worth a second time around.

8.5/10

The crew-cab body style of the RAM 1500 is available in six trim levels. A 3.6 Liter Pentastar V6 which makes a healthy 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque then you have the 5.7 Liter HEMI V8 producing 395 horsepower with 410 pound-feet of torque. All variants are also available as rear-wheel drives or all-wheel drives, but the Big Horn has only an all-wheel drivetrain.

You can get an old-school work truck when going for the Tradesman. The Rebel is a pure off-roader, with self-locking differentials and hill descent control, making it able to conquer any terrain. The Laramie and Longhorn stand in the middle of the spectrum, providing decent cargo-hauling capacity as well as a few creature comforts. The Limited sits as the king of the hill, transforming the insides of the truck like that of a luxury sedan.

The 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab brings a lot to the table. Of all the things that this Ram has to offer, the Rebel appears to be the most sensible choice. It is a workhorse that can be plenty of fun along dirt roads. Paired with some select features, the Crew Cab Rebel is every bit of a playful work truck with impressive cargo capacity and luxury.

2020 RAM 1500 Engine and Performance

In the engine department, Dodge Ram has two choices, a 3.6L V6 Pentastar engine with 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, a 5.7L HEMI V8 with 395 horsepower and 410-pound feet of torque. Even though most pickups in this segment get bigger engines, the Ram 1500 powertrain produces most power on paper. Although anyone with experience in trucks would know that it is the torque that counts. While Ram 1500 offers more than enough of it, the improved figures give a clear improvement to the Chevy and GMC. Still, the awesome 8-speed automatic transmission and e-hybrid system ensure a smooth power delivery, so you never feel out of revs even when encountering steep climbs.

2020 RAM 1500 Crew Cab has 3.6L V6 Engine

Both engines are aided by a 48-volt electrical system that functions more as a propulsion assist rather than a true hybrid. It comes as standard across the range on the lesser 3.6-litre V6. On the more powerful 5.7-litre V8, that hybrid system remains optional. Also standard on both the engine options is an 8-speed automatic transmission that drives either the rear or all the wheels of the 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab.

How fast is the Ram 1500 Crew Cab?

Dodge Ram is a huge pick-up truck. Understandably it won’t have a supercar timing. It does 0-60MPH in 7.6 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 15.6 seconds. Pretty decent for a truck with huge dimensions and heavyweight. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly too to deliver the right amount of power at the right time.

2020 RAM 1500 Crew Cab cover 0-60 in 7.6 sec.

The 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab is the heaviest of the lot. To counter its weight, it also has the most powerful engine. The accelerator is smooth to operate and you can actually get quite a few thrills blitzing across dirt trails. Don't expect a breakneck push when going full throttle. The Ram 1500 Crew Cab is subtle and smooth when on the tarmac.

The Ram 1500 would perform quite well in a drag race of all the popular crew cabs in the United States. It won't cross the finish line first. That would be the GMC Sierra on the account of its lighter chassis. A 0-60 time of 6.6 seconds is quite respectable for a pickup, but it is still not enough to ace the Sierra. The Ford F-150 and the Silverado follow the Ram closely behind.

What about the brakes on the Ram 1500 Crew Cab?

Officials are yet to determine how quickly the 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab manages to stop under panic braking. But it is without a doubt that the brakes are strong and deliver the right amount of feedback to stop this pickup on the drop of a dime. At city speeds, the truck is well capable of coming to a halt during panic stops. The travel and bite is just right to let even novice drivers have a bit of confidence and pick up some speed on the freeway.

2020 RAM 1500 Crew Cab has Front Brake of 14.9 in.

The 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab gets relatively smaller rotors in comparison to the Chevy Silverado 1500 and the GMC Sierra 1500 despite the fact that it is much heavier than both. This can affect the Ram 1500 Crew Cab's braking ability. Regardless, the 2019 version was one of the best pickups as far as braking was concerned. We can expect the same this year as well.

How well does it ride and handle?

The Ram 1500 has 4-wheel coil spring suspension and 5 link coil spring rear suspension which makes the setup more advanced than its rivals. Its ride is carlike and if you still crave for smoothness Ram offers an optional air suspension package which is only available for the Limited trim. Its body movement is minimal and overall control isn’t an issue in daily driving but it’s not as steady as Ford F-150 or the Chevrolet Silverado.

One can also have them swapped for air suspensions which are optional. The optional air-spring suspensions let the rider adjust the ride height accordingly too. This helps improve the Crew Cab’ off-road abilities while making them more fuel-efficient at the same time.

2020 RAM 1500 Crew Cab makes the driver feel relaxed.

The steering is light and the wheels respond well to the slightest flicks. This makes the driver feel relaxed and inspires confidence while making swift manoeuvres. Although, this light-weight pick-up is not meant to take on curves. Courtesy of its sheer weight and size.

How useful is the Ram 1500 Crew Cab?

The 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab can tow a minimum of 6,250 pounds. It may not sound too impressive, but equip this Crew Cab with the right components and it offers a maximum towing capacity of 11,500 pounds which is more than all other pickups in this segment except the Ford F-150.

Low torque certainly hurts the Ram 1500 more in terms of towing. The Chevy Silverado 1500 Crew Cab and the Ford F-150 Supercrew Cab are the leaders of the towing game, followed by the GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab.

The payload capacity of the 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab also impresses a lot. It varies between 1,670 pounds to 2,320 pounds. It’s not class-leading by any means, but we’ll let that slide considering its remarkable towing capacity.

2020 RAM 1500 Fuel Economy

3.0/10

The naturally aspirated V6 and V8 engines of the 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab aren’t as thirsty as one might think. Thanks to their hybrid 48-volt system which is optional on the V8 Hemi though. Consequently, the Crew Cab’s engines offer varying fuel economies.

The most economical is obviously the V6 hybrid setup. Officials claim an estimated EPA rating of 20 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The other V8 engine returns an average of 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

The Ram 1500 Crew Cab benefits greatly from its hybrid powertrain. Consequently, it has the most fuel-efficient engine. Ford uses a smaller 3.3L variant of the same V6. Still, it does not exceed the Ram's mpg figures due to the lack of a hybrid powertrain. The bigger V6 engines on the Silverado and Sierra might offer better torque, which is why they fall behind in fuel economy.

2020 RAM 1500 Interior

7.8/10

When you first look inside you're greeted by a very rich looking cabin. It can be with a variety of different interior colour combinations. From Laramie and up, you do get standard leather seating in either black or light frost beige on most models. RAM 1500 offers good interior comfort. The truck can take up to 6 passengers with no hassles. The front and rear head, shoulder and legroom are good in the crew cab model due to a wide body, tall stance and long wheelbase.

RAM was the first brand to make a luxury truck and with continuous updates from its launch, it still feels quite impressive. The upper dash is covered in stitched soft-touch plastic and while lower portions are hard to touch everything fits together really well and feel solid. It's quite surprising to note that it has been around for nearly a decade. While most Rams are equipped with massive bucket seats and a configurable centre console, there’s also the availability of a three-seat bench. As for the second row, there is so much space that the rear seats can be slid forward or backwards to comfortably accommodate passengers. In fact, the backrest can also be adjusted.

2020 RAM 1500 Crew Cab Seating Arrangement

You have stitched leather from the power window console that extends across to the upper half of the door. In the middle part, you have wood and aluminium insert and leather. Only the front 2 windows are one-touch up and down. The mats on the limited are all-weather and carpeted floor mats with aluminium scuff plate. The seats on top 4 trims are 10-way power adjusting with 2-way lumbar support and 2 person memory function. The leather seats are soft to touch. Perforation and unique stitching are quite appealing.

In comparison, RAM boasts 40.3 inches of legroom and 39.9 inches of headroom that does place it as one of the lowest in class behind Chevy Silverado and f-150. Ram does make up for that space by allowing you to fold up the seat which gives access to the covered storage area. Silverado has the best space in the front passenger compartment of the car. 2019 Ram 1500 still lags the front legroom but has the highest space at the width 45.2 inches of legroom.

2020 RAM 1500 Exterior

6.0/10

Ram 1500 model has an upscale looking chrome grille with RAM Lettering. This design also comes on the longhorn and tungsten edition. The regular Laramie trim comes instead with a more traditional RAM grille, but it does have the extra chrome mesh to fill in the quadrants. Some twenty-five years ago, Dodge completely altered truck designs with the low headlight and tall grille of the Ram. Now, all these years later, the modern-day big-rig Ram looks a lot soberer and tranquil.

On the rear, RAM 1500 has a distinct look which is good since most trucks tend to look the same when viewed from the back. The stand out feature of the back would be the giant RAM badging which comes on the limited only and tungsten would make it body coloured the taillights also have a distinct and premium look to them as they are LED and have chrome around them. Dual chrome exhaust to pump out that burble the engine creates.  These trucks are built tough and can go through any terrain due to their rugged design. The wheelbase is 140 inches which provide for good space in the cabin.

The Ram 1500 Crew Cab is the heaviest in this lineup of pickup trucks. However, it's the GMC Sierra 1500 that has the longest wheelbase. This grants both of them quite a lot of space for the bed to store in more cargo. However, the Ram 1500 handles much better thanks to its adjustable suspension and better weight distribution.

Exterior Features

The several design elements that make the Ram 1500 Crew Cab one heck of a looker are:

  • Large imposing grille
  • Embossed Ram logo
  • Aerodynamic design
  • 22-inch painted/polished aluminium wheels
  • New aluminium tailgate
  • Integrated spoiler

2020 RAM 1500 Safety

Both the NHTSA and IIHS have granted near-perfect scores to the 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab. As part of its redesign, the crumple zone placement has been optimized to make the cabin secure from even the direst of situations. Airbags have been amply placed and are capable of absorbing most of the momentum safely from the passengers.

There are quite a lot of features to ensure the safety of the driver and other people riding along. These features include:

  • Six airbags
  • Rearview camera
  • Electronic Stability control with Roll Stability Control
  • Side Impact Beams
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Driveline Traction Control

Several packages add in a lot more advanced driver aids like Advanced Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, and Blind Spot Monitoring as well. With all this tech in place, you can pretty much never put the strength of the chassis to the test.

Ram 1500 Crew Cab vs. GMC Sierra 1500

With a generation change coming next year for GMC, it's really worth the wait as most of the new stock of 2020 models will be heavily discounted. Major changes to the interior and exterior, tweaked engines, better cabin space and new factor gives it an upper edge over the 2020 models.The Sierra offers a much powerful engine. However, the Ram 1500 Crew Cab is a much better overall package. It offers more second row space. The hybrid engine is more fuel efficient, and it also has an optional V8 engine. The Sierra, on the other hand, is more expensive than the Ram 1500 Crew Cab.

2020 GMC Sierra 1500

Ram 1500 Crew Cab vs. Ford F-150

Ford F-150 has been the best-selling pick-up truck in America for a very long time. In terms of that, Ford F150 is better than Dodge Ram 1500. With regular updates like tweaked EcoBoost engines, 10-speed automatic transmission, intuitive Sync 3 infotainment, an extensive list of safety options (Phew! there are a lot) and it keeps the list going on. Dodge Ram 1500 might have the edge with air suspension but in overall circumstances like towing, fuel economy etc. gives the win to F-150.The Ram 1500 Crew Cab is considerably cheaper than the Ford F-150.

However, there’s a lot more than just MSRP involved while owning a pickup. The Ram is just as fuel-efficient, so it means fewer stops on the road. It also offers more space for passengers. Also, the Ram 1500 Crew Cab with its hybrid engine is a much wiser choice overall.

2020 RAM 1500 Final Verdict

The ride quality is an absolute gem with handling to match. It is the cheapest among the truck category which acts as an advantage in its favour. The payload might be on the lower side but the cargo box feature is a neat idea. It just impresses everyone with its practicality and utility. It offers competitive towing and payload capacity, and also has the most fuel-efficient engine.
