Updated on: July 20, 2020

Porsche as a brand is all about heritage. They are obsessed with manufacturing cars that leave the driver with an exhilarating experience. This is exactly the kind of experience that the 2020 Porsche Cayenne imparts. With a dynamic design and efficient turbocharged engine, the Cayenne is prepared to conquer any terrain that it drives on.

With the growth in the SUV sales in the early 2000s, no manufacturer wanted to be left behind. Porsches' answer to this demand was met by the Cayenne in 2001 before the brand merged with the VW group. Ever since then there has been no turning back as the Cayenne carries its third generation forward this year.

Not many SUVs can make their presence felt like the Cayenne. Boasting the driving dynamics like that of a sports car with the luxury and comfort of a full-blown SUV, the all-new Cayenne is certainly a treat. The high stance and all-wheel drivetrain enable it to tackle any road condition effortlessly.

In 2019, the Cayenne received a major cosmetic upgrade which is what has been carried forward for the 2020 model year. Porsche does not indulge itself in radical design changes, why would they mess with the formula that they have concocted for the perfect SUV?

As there is a single trim available the purchase decision is simple, walk-in a dealership and drive out with a brand new Cayenne. There are multiple options available to personalize the SUV according to preferences.

2020 Porsche Cayenne Engine and Performance

Porsche has the ability to make the best of everything they can. The first thing that comes to people's minds when they hear Porsche is the flat or Boxer engines that are probably one of the sweetest sounding and performing engines in sports car territory.

But for their SUV segment, they have opted to go a different route with the V6 engines. The Cayenne gets the 3.0L turbocharged V6 that produces 335HP and 332lb-ft of torque, decent numbers considering the size and price it flaunts.

2020 Porsche Cayenne SUV has 8 Speed Transmission

The transmission that the V6 is mated to is the 8-speed Tiptronic S which enables both automatic and manual shifts through steering-mounted paddle shifters. Although it is not as refined as the PDK(Porsche Dual-clutch transmission) however it does offer the driver an engaging experience.

The Tiptronic transmission has some issues in keeping up with the engine. Porsche purists always have a complaint with the Tiptronic and prefer the manual or PDK which unfortunately is not offered on the Cayenne.

The V6 in the Porsche produces the same amount of power as the inline-6 in the BMW X5 but has a tiny bit more torque. Caddy falls behind both Porsche and BMW in spite of having a bigger engine. Lexus faces a similar problem with its engine capacity that is bigger than the leaders in this competition.

How fast is the Porsche Cayenne?

Cayenne is a quick SUV and is not a proper performance-oriented utilitarian at that. It can dash to a speed of 60MPH in just 5.9 seconds from standstill. This is a commendable feat considering it weighs above 4500 pounds and has a rather tall frame.

2020 Porsche Cayenne SUV covers 0-60 in 5.9 sec

The transmission complements the engine well enough to achieve this feat. It is not neck-snapping fast, but fast it is indeed.

The X5 has a much-refined tuning and sports a better transmission due to which it stands at the first spot in the acceleration department. The Cayenne follows close behind the BMW and manages to finish in at the second spot. Although the Lexus produces lesser power it does reach the 60MPH mark faster than the more powerful Caddilac.

Ride & Handling

Porsche engineering has defined what handling is and should feel like in a sports car. The Cayenne is an SUV visually but essentially drives like a hot hatch with great cornering abilities. The almost perfect weight distribution and a lower center of gravity does help the handling and reduced body roll.

2020 Porsche Cayenne SUV's handling is and should feel like in a sports car.

With the spectacular chassis control and rear-axel steering, the Cayenne can attack corners and come out of one unlike any other SUV in the market. Anyone would have a wide grin etched on their faces while experiencing the exhilarating drive of the Cayenne from behind the steering wheel.

Braking

The Cayenne is a big and heavy car and needs equally big brakes to control the power surging through the wheels. Porsche has done an excellent job with the brakes that go on the Cayenne to bring it to a halt.

The brake pedals are rather responsive and get the SUV decelerating with the slightest of feedback going through the pedal. The prowess of the brakes is rather commendable with the ability to bring to a standstill from the speed of 60MPH in just 105 ft.

With the available data Porsche does beat the BMW when it comes to the braking department. This feat is achieved due to the lighter frame and bigger brakes that go a long way in improving the braking performance of any vehicle.

2020 Porsche Cayenne Fuel Economy

The V6 is fuel-consuming nonetheless and the performance is the kind that gets one going. The Cayenne isn't the vehicle to pick if fuel efficiency is what one most desires in their vehicle. Considering it is a performance-oriented SUV the fuel efficiency is rather decent.

The BMW X5 is a rather frugal SUV when compared to the other SUV competitors on the list. The Lexus and the Porsche offer the same MPG in the city but the highways are where the Lexus offers better numbers compared to the Porsche. But owing to the bigger fuel tank the Cayenne offers the best range out of the entire competition on a fuel tank.

2020 Porsche Cayenne Interior

7.7/10

The doors of the Cayenne open to a rather opulent interior which exudes pure luxury. It does have the signature Porsche styled interiors with the bolstered seats in the front. With a change in the size during the last year, the Cayenne gets a bigger wheelbase and increases in length which results in more cabin space. The driver seat is 8-way electronically adjustable to give the driver the best position to be in.

2020 Porsche Cayenne SUV Front Seats

The rear seats in the Cayenne are accommodating and can seat 3 passengers rather comfortably. The headroom and legroom available can seat adults that are 6 feet tall rather easily as opposed to the issues that arise in the Macan.

In the front, the Lexus has the most accommodating seats as opposed to the rear seats where the Caddy takes the cake. The BMW trails behind both these SUVs but offers better luxury and comfort.

The standard interior features include:

  • Bucket Front Seats with Leatherette Black material
  • 40-20-40 Folding Split-Bench Front Facing Manual Reclining Flip Forward Cushion/Seatback Rear Seat w/Manual Fore/Aft
  • Leather/Metal-Look Steering Wheel
  • Proximity Key For Push Button Start Only

Infotainment

The gem in the center console is the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment which has the updated Porsche UI. Unfortunately for the android users out there the Cayenne only offers Apple CarPlay, time to switch to an iPhone maybe? The voice control capabilities of the infotainment system are rather dull and at times take a while to get the correct information through.

Cargo Capacity

The Porsche Cayenne fits the role of an everyday family SUV with a hint of fun and thrilling drive experience. The cargo storage in the Cayenne cements its role as a utilitarian with enough space to store luggage for a camping trip to the woods without the rear seats folded.

With the rear seats folded down, one could probably carry a pony down old town road in their Cayenne. The Cayenne trunk can be operated via foot gestures which makes storing things in the trunk with even with bags in both hands a rather easy task.

The X5 is a better player in this battle of utilitarians where the Caddy stands second. The Porsche comes staggering in at the third spot be it behind the rear row or rear seat folded. Lexus offers the least space when it comes to cargo.

2020 Porsche Cayenne Exterior

Porsche has been known to keep the design style intact with the like of 911 and the Boxster retaining a similar design style ever since their introduction. With the major update that came in the design of the Cayenne in 2019 making it the 3rd generation of the SUV.

2020 Porsche Cayenne SUV Three Quarter View

Exterior design remains unchanged from the previous year. The front borrows design cues from the Panamera and the 911 and incorporates them well in the front fascia losing all the unnecessary aspects. The grille is much better and sporty than the previous generation.

On the rear, the taillight design looks like a taller version of the 911 with the LEDs running all around the back accentuated by the sleek lamps. The rear diffuser houses the quad exhaust set up which gets the chrome treatment. On the sides, the Porsche runs on 19-inch rims that give the SUV the height it sits on.

The BMW is the heftiest SUV in this entire segment followed by the Porsche. Lexus has the lowest wheelbase enabling it with better handling out of the entire competition list. The Cadillac is the lightest and small in terms of length as well giving it a rather smaller outlook compared to its rivals.

2020 Porsche Cayenne Safety

9.0/10

Porsche has equipped the Cayenne with few safety features like front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. This is just to show the dedication Porche has to ensure the safety of the occupants. The chassis is sturdy and reliable as its constructed out of reinforced steel and aluminum.

As for crash testing, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has crashed the Cayenne, mostly the case with luxury and premium vehicles.

Key Safety Features include:

  • Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology
  • Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist

2020 Porsche Cayenne Competition

Porsche Cayenne Vs Lexus RX 350 F-Sport

Lexus has been trying to keep up with the times but has failed to do so with the outdated design language. The tech used in the RX 350 does feel outdated as well. The Porsche, on the other hand, has better drive dynamics and performance when compared to the Lexus.

2020 Lexus RX 350 F-Sport

The sheer fun of being behind the steering wheel in the Porsche is something no other manufacturer can surpass. Porsche is the clear winner in this competition.

Porsche Cayenne Vs BMW X5

These two are probably the best SUVs in the segment with their performance and drive dynamics being second to none. The Porsche offers a better handling and drive dynamics while the BMW is a sheer performer that can tear up straights but struggle a bit on corners in comparison to the Cayenne.

2020 BMW X5

This battle is a personal decision while for us the BMW is a winner there are a few others who might feel the Porsche is a winner. The best solution is to test drive both of these to decide for yourself.

 Porsche Cayenne Vs Cadillac XT5

The Cadillac is the prime of American luxury in a way, but the XT5 fails to keep up with the Euro performers in terms of both luxury and performance. The XT5 is sleeker and lighter when compared to the Porsche but other comparisons are where the Cayenne proves its prowess.

2020 Cadillac XT5

The driving experience isn't as enticing in the XT5 due to which the Porsche Cayenne wins this comparison here.

2020 Porsche Cayenne Final Verdict

The 2020 Porsche Cayenne is probably the best version of the SUV since its launch. The Cayenne is much more luxurious and spacious than it ever was and makes more power than before as well. The V6 that is the heart of the SUV is capable enough to entice a thrilling experience every time the pedal hits the floor.

The Cayenne fits multiple roles, be it a daily driver or a family car or just a Porsche that one needs in their garage. Priced a little higher than some other offerings in the market the Cayenne makes up for the price tag with the excellent drive dynamics. It might as well be the most balanced SUV available today making it a good utilitarian to own.
