If you are looking for a no-nonsense compact car, the 2020 Nissan Sentra will impress you. Nissan Engineers simply engineered the most spacious car they could at the lowest cost possible. The result is a compact car more spacious and has more boot capacity than some mid-size sedan with a starting price of $19,090.

Expert Review

6.7

Overall Rating

The 2020 Nissan Sentra is offered with Altima-inspired design that includes a downward-sloping front hood section, bold V-motion grille, wide headlamps, and floating roof. This will make the 2020 Sentra sync with the new Altima, but it will also follow design language with the Versa and Maxima.

Nissan Sentra is available for sale in the U.S. since 2013 and it has marked its success in the segment. Somehow Sentra has managed to portray itself as a value-for-money car. The Nissan Sentra has remained unchanged since last year. The Sentra is now available in 5 different trims levels that increase its versatility and functionality without affecting the price factor a lot. The Sentra is a tough competitor in its class as it comes equipped with almost everything for a daily commuter car. Now it goes against the likes of Forte LX, Toyota Corolla SE, and Hyundai Elantra SE.

2020 Nissan Sentra Features

7.0/10

Starting at just $19,090, the Sentra S is one of the cheapest compact cars on the market. It is now available in three trims as compared to five trim options last year. It gets the 2L naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine mated to a CVT automatic transmission with a Front-Wheel-Drive configuration only.  6-speed manual. However, we strongly recommended upgrading it with optional CVT that takes the price to $18,275.

We Recommend

Nissan Sentra is a value for money purchase and we recommend opting for the middle SV trim. As it gets most of the features you would expect for a minimal price bump if compared to a lower-trim option.

2020 Nissan Sentra Engine and Performance

Keeping with the Sentra’s mission of providing fuss-free transportation, a smooth but unexciting 2.0L Inline-4 engine that produces 149 horses and 145 lb-ft of torque. It’s effortless in city and highway but it feels stressed on steep grades or when you ask for more acceleration. Steering and suspension follow the same philosophy – they are perfectly satisfactory for safe comfortable transportation but not exciting. No turbocharged engine option is available to choose from.

The Sentra comes with just one transmission option which is a CVT automatic gearbox. it lacks a lot in terms of enthusiasm and quickness you might be expecting.

Moving up to the competition, the Sentra is not the most powerful car around unless you start comparing. As for the base models, the Toyota Corolla and the Honda Civic have the best in class powerhouses, producing the same amount of torque.

Acceleration

Acceleration figures are the last thing Nissan engineers will like to talk about Sentra equipped with the 2.0L engine. It’s among the slowest compact cars with 0-60 mph time of 8.5 seconds and hits the quarter-mile margin in 16.6 sec. For a 147hp car, it’s impressive but when it comes to engine performance, well it’s a turn-off.

In terms of acceleration and engine performance, Corolla and Civic take the lead but with a marginal time gap. Despite the fact that both the Hyundai Elantra and the Sentra has almost the same engine and same torque output. The Corolla is on a little higher level as the Nissan.

Braking

The 2020 Sentra gets 11.0-inch brake rotors in front wheels and 9.0-inch brake rotors at the back. The sedan has a bit too sensitive brake pedal that can be particularly annoying in stop and go traffic. However, Sentra posts respectable panic braking performances among competitors and it can stop from 60 mph in 122 feet.

The Toyota Corolla despite being such a fast accelerating car features small and weak brakes and takes 119 ft. to get from 60-0 mph, and that is a lot the smallest distance if compared to rivals. Although things are pretty much the same for other competitors.

Ride and Handling

The Sentra is a regular midsize family sedan and it is a perfect fit for a daily commute. It has four-wheel independent suspension, power steering, comfortable interiors, CVT transmission, and cruise, to ensure an easy hassle-free ride. It has everything to impress you while driving until you go hard on the pedals.

The Sentra S is not a bit on the sporty side, it is just designed to get the work done as a daily commuter vehicle, it has laggy acceleration, numb steering, slow shifting automatic transmission does not perform up to the mark, and it lacks mobility as well.

2020 Nissan Sentra Sedan Front View

Nissan did work on the sound insulation as it hardly allows any road or engine noise to seeps inside the cabin. The Senta also comes equipped with all-season tires as to handle every weather with ease.

2020 Nissan Sentra Fuel Economy

6.2/10

The Senta comes equipped with a 2.0L I4 a is less gas-thirsty than the turbocharged units of the previous models. The CVT unit manages to deliver 29 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway. However, equipping the must-have CVT ups the MPG ratings. However, the Sentra still lags to be the best efficient car out of the rivals.

The Honda Civic has the best in class fuel economy followed by the Toyota Corolla and Sentra. Compared to the Sentra there is not much difference in the fuel economy any of the competitors offer.

2020 Nissan Sentra Interior

7.7/10

The Sentra offers one of the most spacious interiors among compact cars and the trunk is equally generous. The 60/40 split seat provides added flexibility. The high driving position offers excellent visibility and the acoustic glass keeps outside noise outside. However, competitors have a more upscale interior quality.

2020 Nissan Sentra Sedan Front Seats

If spaciousness means comfort to you, the sedan's interior will impress you. The front seats offer good legroom and shoulder room and even with the moon-roof, the tall boxy design offers excellent headroom. The tall design and the high driver’s seat also combine to offer an excellent driving position with effortless outward visibility.

The rear seats are equally expansive and even an adult passenger will find it easy to get comfortable in the rear middle seat. However, the cabin quality leaves you asking for more if you drive a competitor like the Honda Civic back to back.

Infotainment System

The base 2020 Sentra S gets a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system while you can opt for larger 8-inch touchscreen infotainment with NissanConnect featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless integration on higher trims. Audiophiles are catered to with the available eight-speaker Bose audio system. However, Nissan does not offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in Sentra.

2020 Nissan Sentra Sedan has 7-inch Infotainment Touch Screen

The Sentra does feature some packages to upgrade the standard infotainment system, but as you go up the infotainment gets way better and more advanced and functional.

Cargo Capacity

The Sentra has best in class cargo space, it features a 15.1 cubic foot of cargo volume, for a midsize sedan the boot space is pretty satisfactory. The sedan offers one of the most cavernous trunks in the compact car class. The 60/40 split rear seat and wide pass-through ensures added flexibility when carrying longer items and three passengers.

2020 Nissan Sentra Exterior

5.0/10

The 2020 Nissan Sentra received a major facelift in 2016 to bring it in-line with the new Nissan V motion design language. The design is not overly busy but does give this compact sedan some road presence. It does feel noticeably taller than the competitors because it is.

You can equip even the base Sentra S with a Deck-lid spoiler but if you are looking for racy highlights, why not go completely bonkers and get the Midnight trims. These dark Sentras possess black wheels, black spoiler, black mirrors and plenty of other mean highlights and they cost just over a thousand dollars over the comparable trim.

2020 Nissan Sentra Sedan Three Quarter View

The Sentra S is 182.1 inches long and 69.3 inches wide with a body height of 58.9inch that spares enough space to features the most spacious interior in the whole class. It has 6.4inch of ground clearance and 106.3inch of the wheelbase, that makes it easier to drive on uneven surfaces. Despite its massive ground clearance and spacious interior, the Sentra is a sleek compact looking sedan.

The Nissan Sentra weighs average among the competition and its overall length, width and wheelbase are nothing different compared to other compact cars implying it’s as suited to tight parking spaces as other compact cars. However, its tallest compact car and its higher driving position afford you better outside visibility – a boon in city traffic.

Exterior Feature

The new-look 2020 Sentra packs quite a knock as far as exterior shell is concerned. Some of the highlights are

  • LED projector headlamps
  • Signature LED daytime running lights
  • Available LED fog lights
  • LED taillamps
  • Heated outside mirrors with integrated LED turn signals
  • Body-color door handles

2020 Nissan Sentra Safety

7.7/10

Impressively, the CVT equipped the Nissan now gets automatic emergency braking as standard. A rearview camera is standard as well as it’s now a regulatory requirement. Along with these, the optional Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control complete the available active safety features and driver assistance systems list. The Sentra comes standard with front, rear and dual side-mounted airbags, rear child safety locks, engine immobilizer, airbag occupant sensing deactivation and tire pressure monitor.

Other than that, it features, stability control, traction control, auto-delay off headlamps, dusk sensing headlamps, emergency braking assists, and rear center 3-point belt. The safety features do not get any major upgrades as you move up to the higher trim levels. Well, the Sentra has also been rated by the NHTSA and IIHS with a 4-star overall rating.

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control

2020 Nissan Sentra Competition

Nissan Sentra vs Toyota Corolla

The Corolla is the car that defines the compact-car segment and has the distinction of best-selling car in the world. The reason is simple – immense practicality, bulletproof reliability, sofa-like rear seats with unbelievable legroom for a compact car and excellent value for money. It’s a perfect point A to B tool. But so is the Sentra at a lower price. However, the Sentra lacks the Corolla’s upscale interior.

2020 Toyota Corolla

 Nissan Sentra vs Honda Civic

The Honda Civic is frequently called the best available compact car and for good reasons. It magically blends a terrific fuel economy with an enthusiastic engine. It rides comfortably and offers corner craving dynamics as well. Its interior is attractive and features loaded and it’s priced competently too. However, the Sentra is more spacious and is priced more competently as well.

2020 Honda Civic Sedan

2020 Nissan Sentra Final Verdict

If you are looking for a decently comfortable and spacious urban runabout at a budget, the 2020 Nissan Sentra should rank high on your lists. It is not only spacious but is pretty functional as well, it has the 5-seating capacity, enough cargo space, impressive fuel economy, infotainment system and more than enough safety features and so it stands up to the standard of a family sedan.

The smooth ride and excellent high-speed stability combine with quiet interiors and spacious boot to make this compact car viable for long road trips with family. Plus, the Sentras are known to be reliable and fetch good value in the used car market. However, the interior feels it’s built at a cost and the powertrain is not remotely exciting. Fuel efficiency could be better as well.
