2020 Nissan Armada Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: February 21, 2020
Aaron Smith's image

Aaron Smith

Voluptuous is a compliment for some SUVs, but we cannot say this for the 2020 Nissan Armada because of its shabby exterior. It is the big bruiser of the Nissan family and also the most expensive SUV of the Japanese automaker. It, however, shares its bones with its upmarket cousin, the Infiniti QX80. There are differences between the two, and Armada certainly lacks Infiniti's refined details.

It is a luxurious three-row family hauler that can seat up to eight passengers and has the power to tow up to 8,500-pounds. Unlike the GMC Yukon and Ford Expedition, which also have an extended wheelbase version, the Armada comes in only one size, while there are four trims to choose from. You only get a 5.6-liter V-8 engine mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission that is standard across all the trims.

See detailed review »

Pros

The tranquil interior is appealing.

The ride is silent on long journeys.

The V8 engine is smooth and delivers ample power.

Safety features are enough in standard trim.

Cons

The application of V8 gives poor fuel economy.

Outdated infotainment system with no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

The third row is quite cramped.

Cargo area is uplifted making it hard to life cargo onto the car.

What's New?

Small changes to trim levels and feature availability.

Heated exterior mirrors for every trim.

Optional 22-inch wheel package.

The 2020 Nissan Armada is a truly decent substantial SUV that gets eclipsed by its cohorts. In spite of the fact that the Armada gives a powerful engine, high towing limit, and an upscale inside, it additionally has undersized first-and third-push seats, beneath normal cargo limit, and an out of date infotainment framework. It's certainly worth thinking about the Nissan SUV while you're auto shopping, yet other extensive SUVs convey more to the table.

We Recommend

There are two trims that you can consider if you are planning to by the SUV, the SL, and the Platinum. The Platinum is just one notch below the top trim and gets almost every feature that the Armada has in store.

You can also upgrade to the second-row captain’s chair for $450. Meanwhile, if you think the Platinum is a pricier option to go with, then the SL is for you. It offers almost every feature that the Platinum does, except for some premium features like heated second-row seats and a rear-seat entertainment system. Prices for the SL start just over $50,000.

2020 Nissan Armada Engine and Performance

5.0/10

There is not much to choose from as the Nissan Armada leaves us with a sole V-8 engine. It feels zesty and quick, and also delivers more horsepower than many of its rivals. Despite its heft, the Armada never feels sluggish and offers smooths ride over most road surfaces.

Fuel economy is not at all impressive considering it is a full-size SUV as rivals offer better mileage. Towing capacity is however impressive as the Armada when equipped properly can tug up to 8,500-pounds.

2020 Nissan Armada SUV has 5.6L DOHC 32-Valve V8 Engine

The Armada comes mated to a 5.6-liter V-8 engine rated at 390-horsepower and 394-pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automatic transmission along with rear-wheel drive is standard while four-wheel drive comes optional. The transmission holds the engine back as it constantly hunts for gears while its engine makes a steady, rising growl, which feels pleasing and is accompanied by brisk acceleration.

Although the Armada features a decent engine output. It still lacks in terms of competition, as it gets overshadowed by both the GMC and Ford. Still, the V-8 packs enough punch to match the big size and a mountain of mass to haul with a healthy engine grunt.

Acceleration

The V-8 engine provides the Nissan with solid acceleration but at the expense of fuel economy, of course. It is brisk and never feels slow on performance. Passing maneuvers are easy to execute as the Armada takes 5.9 seconds to make 0-60. Considering the rivals, these numbers put up a great show as the Armada also beats others when it comes to covering a quarter-mile.

Ride and Handling

At nearly 6,000-pounds, then it is a large SUV. It manages its weight reasonably well on a curvy road and offers a smooth ride over the jagged pavement. Armada, unlike its pricier cousin, the Infiniti QX80, with which it shares many characteristics, comes with a fully independent suspension consisting of the coil rather than air spring setup that soaks up most of the bumps in the road. The Armada also has a 20-inch wheel instead of a 22-inch wheel found on the Infiniti QX80, which only makes things better for this Nissan hauler.

2020 Nissan Armada SUV Front View

Even with the optional 20-inch wheels, the Armada rides smooth. It feels more refined than its GM rivals; however, those rivals do possess better steering feedback than the Nissan. We are talking about body control, which is impressive and makes the car heave less on both front and back while braking or accelerating. Body roll is significant, which is necessary to keep track of the vehicle's weight while cornering. Overall, for a long drive or running around town, the Armada is an excellent package but, recovering through tight parking spots with that big-sized SUV will take a lot of effort.

Braking

Considering it is a 3-ton vehicle, it is hard to find any fault with the brakes. The pedal feels smooth while the hauler takes 128 feet in coming to halt form 60 mph. Ford Expedition leads the segment with 121-feet of stopping distance.

The most significant factor affecting Armada to excel in braking is the most extensive set of brake rotors in its competition. Along with lesser curb weight. Other competitors do have enough braking potential, but the Armada does not lack at all.

2020 Nissan Armada Fuel Economy

3.0/10

The engine may let you down at the fuel pump, however. Nissan estimates that the Armada gets just 14 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway with a combined mpg rating of 16 mpg. Those ratings lag behind many other large SUVs, even those with V8 engines.

This big engine segment is indeed thirsty, while the best fuel efficiency figures are by Ford Expedition with 17mpg in the city, which makes the Armada lacking behind Getting a fuel economy of 14 mpg of city fuel efficiency. Even though all other rivals showcases better highway efficiency of 23mpg, the Armada still lags way behind with 19mpg only.

2020 Nissan Armada Interior

5.0/10

Armada's interior is good-looking and accommodating while getting in and out of the SUV is made easy by the big doors and grab handles. There are lots of physical buttons to master. However, they are all marked but remain at a distance from the driver's reach. Meanwhile, the cabin remains roomy, and the interior fit-and-finish proves its worth for the money you pay.

Seating and comfort

It gets the right amount of seat height adjustment in the driver's seat, which makes it easy for most to settle in and reach the pedals. Even the telescoping steering wheel comes with a substantial range of adjustments. Drivers enjoy a commanding view of the road, and a 360-degree camera comes in handy while parking and backing up.

Armada has a quiet cabin, and the material quality is top-notch. The base Armada with a second-row bench has seating for eight while a second-row bucket seat in the top trim drops the capacity to seven. The front seats are comfortable and provide the right amount of head and legroom but still lag behind the GMC brothers. Space in the second row is at par with the rivals, while the third row is only good enough to accommodate kids.

Despite being a big SUV outside, Nissan Armada SV disappoints when it comes to interior spaciousness. This SUV is as small on inside as big it appears to be from outside. Although it has a decent space for an 8-seater SUV and is appreciably comfortable, yet it lacks space when compared with its rivals.

Infotainment

The Nissan gets redesigned last year, but still, it has one of the most antiquated infotainment systems in the class. It looks and feels outdated and does not even support smartphone features like Android Auto or the Apple CarPlay. The touchscreen is also at a distance from the driver's reach.

2020 Nissan Armada SUV Infotainment

Standard features include:

Interior Features

Cargo

The Armada has a littler cargo limit than most substantial SUVs, however with the third or potentially second columns collapsed down, despite everything, it has a lot of cargo space to pull brandishing rigging, baggage, or even furniture. However, if you intend to utilize the Armada to take a full traveler supplement on an excursion, you may have issues because the cargo limit behind the third column (only 16.5 cubic feet) isn't sufficiently huge for that much gear.

2020 Nissan Armada Exterior

5.0/10

Armada does not look pretty from outside; in fact, it looks dowdy. It resembles the QX80 in one way or the other but with less chrome work and fender flares. Nissan designers have although worked hard to make things more interesting by adding a lot of curves around the body but still failed to impress.

In the segment, the Armada is the tallest and has an impressive 9.1-inches of ground clearance, even after which it is not suitable for off-roading because of its massive body mass. The suspension is also not strong enough to take those big rocks, and the Armada also lacks the multi-terrain traction control system.

2020 Nissan Armada Safety

The car is not tested by the independent or the federal agencies to date. We will update the safety score once it arrives. Meanwhile, Nissan has covered the Armada with a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Armada is well-equipped with standard safety features and offers more as optional. There are six airbags, including a curtain airbag, which runs to the third row. The Platinum trim gets blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and active lane control. These techs are optional on the SL and SV trims. New for this year is a high-tech rear-view mirror that streams a constant video feed from the rear camera. It eliminates the visual obstruction caused by rear roof pillar backrest and passenger’s head.

Safety Features:-

  • Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Traction Control System (TCS)
  • Standard automated emergency braking
  • Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert

2020 Nissan Armada Competition

Nissan Armada vs Chevrolet Tahoe

The Chevy Tahoe ranks high in the large SUV segment because of its luxurious interior features and intelligent design. The Tahoe seats nine as compared to eight in the Armada, although the third row in both these SUVs is cramped. Tahoe also scores ahead with its intuitive infotainment system, which comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, unlike Armada. Chevy also offers better handling and fuel economy than its Nissan rival and is a better all-round vehicle.

2020 chevrolet Tahoe

Nissan Armada vs GMC Yukon

GMC Yukon boasts one of the most beautiful cabins in the class and can seat nine passengers, which is more than Nissan’s Armada. The Yukon also boasts one of the most user-friendly infotainment systems. It offers features such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with a Wi-Fi hot spot-none of this is available in the Armada. GMC also offers a quiet ride and gets better fuel efficiency than the Nissan. The Yukon is a better SUV in the long run and is a better choice over the Nissan Armada.

2020 GMC Yukon

Nissan Armada vs Ford Expedition

The Ford Expedition is an outstanding SUV, and it has best in class cargo capacity and towing capacity. It features a powerful V-6 engine that never feels short on power and also provides far better fuel economy than the Nissan Armada. The Expedition is also a capable off-roader, unlike Armada, which is not suitable for the job. Ford is a class leader in the segment, but a fully-loaded Expedition can coast almost as much as a luxury SUV. Even the base model costs $5000 more than the Nissan. However, the Expedition justifies its price and offers a lot more than the Armada.

2020 Ford Expedition

2020 Nissan Armada Final Verdict

5.6/10

The 2020 Nissan Armada is a genuinely decent substantial SUV that gets eclipsed by its cohorts. Although the Armada gives a powerful engine, high towing limit, and an upscale inside, it additionally has undersized first-and third-push seats, beneath reasonable cargo limit, and an out of date infotainment framework.

It's certainly worth thinking about the Nissan SUV while you're auto shopping, yet other extensive SUVs convey more to the table. The Toyota Sequoia has better cargo space and a simple to-utilize infotainment framework, and the Chevy Tahoe has possibly the most delightful lodge in the class and offers tech features the Armada doesn't.
So while the Armada is a decent SUV, it presumably shouldn't be at the highest priority on your rundown.
