In the world of entry-level luxury-sport sedans, the upcoming 2021 Audi S5 Sportback puts up competitive results at the test tracks but it falls short of its rivals in driving engagement. Powered by a 3.0L V6 engine, the S5 is a performance-oriented German car combining tonnes of practicality and outright performance. The Audi S5 Sportback sits in between the luxurious yet mellow A5 Sportback and the RS5 Sportback rocket ship. Nothing much is expected to change in the 2021 S5 Sportback compared to the 2020 model. We shall only find some significant addition of features across the lineup.

Everybody loved the Audi A5 until the demand for speed and power took a spin. This is the gap that is fulfilled by the V6 powered Audi S5 that packs in about 100 more horses than the A5 along with several convenient features and upgrades, making the overall ride quality enjoyable. The first Audi S5 Coupe was unveiled in 2007, then the Sportback was unveiled in 2009 and then the car went on sale sometime around spring 2010. The 2021 Audi S5 sits in the second-generation of production which was introduced for the 2018 model year.

Just like its predecessor, the 2021 Audi S5 Sportback has kept its luxury quotient at par with sporty and premium upholstery and standard massaging seats. Alongside the four-door hatchback model, the Audi S5 is also available in a coupe and convertible body styles. For 2021, we shall get some new features added to the trim levels. Let’s see what to expect and when to expect the 2021 Audi S5 Sportback.

What’s New with the 2021 Audi S5 Sportback?

  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Keyless ignition, heated side mirrors, and blind-spot monitoring
  • Adaptive Cruise control comes standard in Premium Plus trim
  • Top-level Prestige will get standard heated rear seats

What’s the estimated price and the release date of the 2021 Audi S5 Sportback?

The upcoming Audi S5 Sportback may come with an estimated price tag of $51,900. There are reports that the Audi S5 Convertible and the S5 Sportback, both the versions should be headed to the dealerships at the very beginning of next year.

What to expect under the hood of the 2021 Audi S5 Sportback?

The 2021 S5 Sportback will be powered by the same engine as the outgoing model. All the trims of the current year’s S5 Sportback are powered by the 3.0L turbocharged V6 engine, we are expecting the same for the 2021 version. It accelerates rapidly from a stop, and overtaking other drivers on the highway with that engine option is effortless.

The 8-Speed automatic transmission performs admirably, but the preference for its second-gear starts when in Comfort mode exacerbates the engine’s initial turbo lag and then it renders the S5 sleepy off the mark. The V6 engine produces 349 horsepower and along with that 369 lb-ft of torque.

The BMW M340i is the fastest in this lineup courtesy its twin-turbo Inline-6. The Audi S5 has the capacity to hit 60 MPH in under 4.6 seconds, which is very impressive in the segment, but the BMW is the fastest by a long shot. We are sure that in this price segment the 2021 S5 would offer better value than its predecessor.

How does the 2021 Audi S5 Sportback handle?

Talking about the outgoing Audi S5 Sportback, it gets a nicely tuned suspension which results in impressive ride quality. It's not the stiffest despite having large 20-inch wheels. The suspension of the S5 does its work very well. Once seated inside the car one can barely hear the suspension thud or any kind of vibrations even over bad stretches of road.

We are now expecting the same from the upcoming version of S5. The car feels extremely stable and agile while negotiating high-speed corners and it manages to provide a polished experience in this segment.

How many miles to the gallon will the 2021 Audi S5 Sportback deliver?

Now the EPA estimates of the upcoming Audi S5 Sportback will earn 20/27 mpg city/highway. These numbers are just down from the previous model year when the Audi was then rated at 21/30 MPG. While of course the 2021 version of the Audi S5 Sportback has not been tested out in the real world, the previous or the last one that was evaluated returned 33 MPG during the test.

In addition to that, if Audi introduces the hybrid powertrain for the upcoming S5, then these numbers are very much expected to rise more.

What to expect from the 2021 Audi S5 Sportback’s interior?

The interior of the S5 Sportback features premium materials, top-notch fit and finish and the cabin is laden with ergonomic touches. Despite having a low roofline, the Audi S5 is relatively spacious on the inside. Those seeking even more interior space will be better served by the less swoopy Audi S4 Sedan, and that includes almost 0.5-inch more legroom for the back passenger seats.

Each and every S5 Sportback features luxurious touches such as a front seat with heating and massage function, there is three-zone climate control, a sunroof, and a passive entry system. All the credit goes to the hatchback body-style of the car, the Sportback is impressively versatile and it has one of the roomiest trunks in the segment.

Will the 2021 Audi S5 Sportback be worth my time and money?

The Audi S5 Sportback not only gets a turbocharged V6 engine providing a healthy dose of performance but also brings great driving dynamics and handling courtesy its latest iteration of Audi’s famed Quattro AWD. The S5 Sportback is rock-solid from inside and it feels expensive even on the base trim and thanks to the gorgeous upholstery and some standard features like the front-seat massaging. The upcoming Audi S5 Sportback will be a complete package that barely puts a foot wrong.
