The name “Mach 1” was first designated to special edition Mustangs of 1969. These continued to see production till 1978. It was revived for 2003 and 2004 to a limited-edition run.

With the Bullitt hitting the block after 2020, there is a throne remaining empty for the special-edition Mustangs to take. Aside from the Shelbys, Ford doesn’t have a lot of Mustang trims making a mark on history. However, fans are waiting for the big reveal of one of the most legendary ‘Stangs: Mach 1. And as the new spy shots have surfaced, it will prove to be quite a beast.

The prototype spotted in the spy shots seems to receive several exterior upgrades. The front fascia is upgraded, so is the rear fender. The exhaust tips have a more aggressive look and a louder note. Aerodynamics have been modified as well with a completely new spoiler. The engine sounds like a V8, much like the 5.0L Coyote version of the Bullitt. Still, the full specs might differ after launch.

The Mach 1 designation was supposed to what is now known as the Mach E. The idea went to the bin after the massive backlash Ford got for ruining their most famous muscle car. The Detroit-based manufacturer really needs a winner and soon. The Mach 1 might just prove to be their golden ticket.

The name “Mach 1” was first designated to special edition Mustangs of 1969. These continued to see production till 1978. It was revived for 2003 and 2004 to a limited-edition run. These new Mach 1 Mustangs had Brembo brakes, Tokico shock absorbers, a sport-tuned suspension, and functional roof scoops. While it is anyone’s guess if similar design tropes will appear in 2021, a hybrid version is rumoured to be in the works.
