2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: February 24, 2020

Mercedes has been always a synonym to luxury and C class is no different. Now building heat from BMW and Jaguar have made them imbibe that sporty intent to it as well. The insides keep on being the most lavish lodges in the market. While the C class isn't expected for an all-new substitution for a couple of more years, this mid-cycle refresh brings some striking changes.

As the Mercedes says, completely new models not named G-class will feature smooth, creaseless bodies created to be "beautiful, pure forms. The interiors continue to be the most luxurious cabins in the market. While the C class in 't due for an all-new replacement for a few more years, this mid-cycle update brings some notable changes.

One thing that the customers are sure to notice is the price that the new  C-Class has raised when compared to last year's model. But the new model more than makeup for the price difference with an abundance of new convenient and performance features. Base C300 comes along with a lot of standard features along with a lot of available options via package items. These all make it a good and the preferred choice. But if you are not a fan of a manual transmission, then going with C300 4Matic (all-wheel-drive) is the option for you.

2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Engine and Performance

Beneath the hood lies a 2.0L Turbocharged Inline-4 engine that delivers 255-horsepower, combined with a new 9-Speed Automatic and rear- or all-wheel drive is the source for the power of the basic C300. The C-Class is a linear machine that doesn’t push you into the seat with its power but has a pleasant and comfortable way to it.

2020 Mercedes Benz C-Class sedan is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged engine

The 9-speed automatic transmission transfers power to all four wheels with Mercedes' 4Matic system. With smooth upshifts and ample power throughout the rev range, you'd question how there is no noise following the bold acceleration.

Every opponent is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged motor that maintains every one of them to fall under the alike territories. In fact, the BMW 3 Series offers equal power and somewhat more torque. Lexus is the least powerful of the group. The power distribution also varies between the lot due to the diverse transmission settings.

Acceleration

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is able to rush you to 0-60 mph in just 5.7 sec, credit to its widely variable timing valves. Turbo lag is there initially when the car started along with a sound from 4-cylinder coming to the ears of the driver. But the car goes as smoothly as it can, as some ground is covered by it.

Although when you first start the car, it is surprising to hear and feel a four-cylinder humming in such a plush and expensive car, as you cover some ground, it becomes clear that the power is ample and that turbo lag is near imperceptible.

But when it comes to comparing the new Mercedes with its rivals, it is only second to BMW 3 series and Audi A4. Lexus fares last because of the least power and torque figures.

Ride and Handling

There was a time when cars like BMW 3-Series and Audi A4 owned the ground when it came to handling. But the new Mercedes Benz C-Class has made up its own ground. Its electric variable ratio-steering gives the precise feel and real feedback and has a quick ratio. Through all its models, the air suspension delivers a smooth and comfortable ride without much body lean, which keeps the car flat even in very tight corners.

Equipped with the Selective damping system, individual shock absorbers adjust themselves automatically depending on the drivers driving style and the road condition. These adjustments make the ride in Mercedes more comfortable with a smoother and composed ride. The Mercedes' trademark AWD- 4Matic - passes more torque to the rear wheels, delivering the ride an engaging dynamic.

Braking

Equipped with adaptive braking technology including Predictive Brake Priming which sets the pads close to the discs for more immediate response if you lift off the accelerator quickly, the Class is completely reliable when it comes to braking.

It takes 2020 C-Class takes 124 feet to come to 0 from 60 mph, which certainly can be said is not a good number to consider. Although there is barely any instability at maximum braking.

While comparing the braking performance of Mercedes Benz C-Class with others in the class, it does not look good. While the BMW 3-series takes 103 ft to come to 0 from 60 mph, the Mercedes lags the ground with 124 ft. Lexus and jaguar are somewhat similar to the C class in stopping prowess.

2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Fuel Economy

8.5/10

Of all the powertrains that the C-Class offers, the standard turbo-4's are the most efficient. The basic C300 sedan provides a mileage of 24 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway and a combined of 28 mpg. With all-wheel drive, the numbers fall to 23/32/26 mpg.

Comparing to its rival, fuel economy would be something in the middle of the stack. While the Lexus IS 300 and Audi A4 give lower mileage of 24 and 27 mpg respectively. BMW 3-Series takes the win with 30 mpg combined.

2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Interior

9.0/10

Even though the C-Class is considered to be an entry-level luxury vehicle, the materials used and sturdy construction exceed expectations. The room available in the front seats is spacious enough for taller adults that they don't feel confined when the cockpit is wrapped around them. The long doors allow easy access to the front seats. The rear seat access is impeded with the top up, and the front seats take a while to move forward.

2020 Mercedez Benz C Class Seating

The cockpit has been redesigned to a simple and elegant layout by limiting the number of buttons to the essential functions. But this has lead to reaching out to the secondary controls with some digging and thus making the menu structure take some time to become familiar with.

The seats in C-Class are not spacious of the lot as its opposition provides for a more lofty adventure. But the remarkably supportive seats will excuse the space restraint. Lexus IS 300 has the most capacious front row whereas the most luxurious rear chairs are in the BMW 330i.

  • Keyless Start

Infotainment System

Mercedes Benz C-Class comes with a COMAND infotainment system that scores points for feature content but comes up short when it comes to usability. The trace pad interface that hovers over the main rotary controller is especially challenging to get accustomed to.

2020 Mercedes Benz C Class Sedan Infotainment Display

The Burmester Surround Sound System open with the Premium package is the takeaway part here as it actively uses the frame of the vehicle to augment bass and present a more natural experience. Voice recognition is quite accurate, even with the top down at highway speeds. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are all available as standard.

Infotainment Features

  • 10.25-inch Hi-Res Center Display
  • Steering wheel with touch button controls
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • FrontBass System
  • Dual USB Audio Ports
  • Central Controller
  • Bluetooth Audio Streaming

Cargo Capacity

Although cargo space for Mercedes Benz C-Class is adequate to something bigger than Carry-on luggage. All the C-Class comes standard with 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats along with a power trunk lid.

2020 Mercedes Benz C Class cargo space is satisfactory as 12.6 cubic feet is not much

Locks and straps are equipped to hold smaller or brittle items in position. The rear center armrest can alone go down to access the cargo section. Space is not half bad as two suitcases can fit in with efficiency.

You'd need to be a die-hard Merc fanboy to recognize the 2020 C300 apart from the earlier model. The front and rear fascia have undergone a facelift to combine more prominent air intakes. The LED head and tail lamps are redesigned and give the sedan a contemporary look to fit in with other 2020 models. The sedan still has the iconic low, hunkered down look which screams premium from every angle.

2020 Mercedes C-Class with a redesigned grille and AMG-line alloy wheels

The all-LED headlamps and taillamps are standard and are a chronicle of the C-Class. Available AMG line combinations add a lot more sportiness to the C-Class with a redesigned grille and AMG-line alloy wheels. The sloping roofline gives it a coupe-like body line that looks great but strips the headroom off the second row.

Audi A4 is the largest of the lot by a margin and so is the variation in length among the lot. C-Class is the lowest with just 3.8 inches of ground clearance which supports high-speed maneuverability. All of the cars have more or less the equivalent dimensions which makes it a close contest. But the A4 weighs in at the most which steal off its performance. C-Class being the smallest makes it the most agile of the group.

2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Safety

Safety is top-notch on the C-Class as apart from the basic features, it also has a host of standard driver-assist features. The crash test results are not out yet but as there are minimal changes from last year, it should bag a top score of Good in all the measures.

The ATTENTION ASSIST feature is very useful as it monitors the driver and warns of drowsiness, a boon for long gruesome travels when we seldom rest. Apart from the standard list, you can also choose from an array of optional active and passive features.

Safety Features

  • 6 airbags
  • LED Daytime Running Lamps
  • Blind Spot Assist
  • Adaptive Braking Technology
  • ATTENTION ASSIST
  • Crosswind Alert
  • Rearview Camera
  • Electronic Stability Program
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System

2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Competition

2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan vs 2020 Lexus IS 300

The Japanese equivalent is a worthy candidate which has a well-isolated cabin that gives more importance to occupancy comfort and gives the best value for money proposition in terms of the feature list. It is a pleasant ride that goes uninterrupted over uneven surfaces.

2020 Lexus IS 300

But Lexus’s best is not suitable to topple the German as C-Class provides us with a much better-performing car which is big on features and the luxury offered is a class above. We choose the German over the Jap.

2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan vs 2020 Audi A4

The higher price of Mercedes Benz C-Class is completely justified by the features it has to provide. With the luxury from Mercedes to the powerful engine of 255 hp compared to that of 190 hp, Mercedes should always be the preferred when these two in question.

2020 Audi A4

2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan vs 2020 BMW 3-Series

With a comparable starting price of both the Mercedes Benz C-Class and that of BMW 3-Series, BMW does not stand up to it. The reputation of BMW, its efficiency and a delight to drive are what stand in front of a powerful engine, comfort, and a seriously upmarket image.

2020 BMW 3 series

Although all the cars have a lot to offer and would be a worthwhile buy, the Jaguar XE has to offer better features than any others. Mercedes is for comfort, so Audi and BMW are for their efficiency.

2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Final Verdict

When it comes to luxury in compact sedans, C-Class is pretty much the benchmark. Power-hungry drivers have three AMG models to pick from, including the highly recommended AMG C43. Just to avoid the complex infotainment menus and confusing controls for basic media operations, just make sure you add the newly available smartphone integration to your C-Class.

Merc excels in all characters and rewards you with a well-polished car that is much more pleasurable than the competition. We would have loved for a more comfortable second-row seating but nothing can be 100 percent perfect and the C-Class is the closest one to it.
