The long sculpted hood of the car hides a massive 4.0-liter twin-turbo engine which cranks out an impressive 603hp power and 664-pound feet of torque. The engine is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission that powers all the wheels.

This niche category may have very few contenders, but the competition is fierce. The S 63 AMG aims to sway away buyers from a popular choice like the BMW M760 I, Maserati Quattroporte GTS and the Porsche Panamera Turbo.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Engine and Performance

The Mercedes-Benz is powered by a handcrafted V8 Biturbo which puts out 603 hp @ 5,500 rpm and 664 lb-ft of torque @ 2,750 rpm. The performance is earth-shattering and it tops out at 186 mph. Power delivery is linear and it maintains the luxury pedigree. Twin-scroll turbochargers placed between engine banks virtually produce zero turbo lag and the response is immediate at lower rpm’s. A performance-tuned all-wheel-drive system is standard.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 produces the highest amount of horses despite the smaller powertrain than the BMW M760i while doles out a similar number. Porsche Panamera takes the third spot with its revolutionary boxer engine and the Maserati stands at last.

Acceleration

The Mercedes-Benz S class can scout to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds which is above average for the top of the line luxury sedan. It covers the quarter-mile under 12 seconds which can be considered race car territory.

When we talk of the competition, the Porsche Panamera decimates the competition with its 3.4 second 0-60 mph run followed by the S 63 sedan. The BMW M 760i is half of a second slower than later while the Quattroporte takes the highest time to reach 60 mph.

Ride and Handling

Luxury cars of today are not only meant to wrap its occupants in exotic material and wood trim anymore but it should also offer enthusiastic performance. The S 63 AMG exactly does that with its Biturbo V8, communicative steering and sports-tuned chassis. The Variable-torque AMG performance 4matic seamlessly distributes power to all when and sends 100 percent to the rear wheel for rewarding agility.

The Magic ride control reads the road ahead and adjusts the suspension according to your desires or meet the demands of the road below. The cabin is well muffled and remains extremely quiet even at highway speed.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S63 hits 0-60 in just 3.5 sec.

AMG S 63 utilizes an electromagnetic power steering that is responsive in corners and also adept at low-speed maneuvers. The available drive modes – Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ allow for adjustments in shift points, throttle response and steering input. The Comfort mode offers lush and opulent ride while the Sports+ mode stiffens the suspension and V8 awakes with the expletive exhaust note.

Braking

To stop this yacht-sized Benz, Mercedes used rigid 6-piston calipers in the front and 4 pistons ventilated calipers in the rear. You can also opt for lightweight AMG carbon-ceramic brakes which are race proved for endurance running and exceptional performance.

The brake pedal is light and easy to modulate around town. The 122 feet stopping distance from 0 to 60 is terrific for its size.

Comparatively, the Maserati Quattroporte and Panamera have much lower curb weight which accounts for shorter stopping distances. The S 63 AMG and BMW M 760i take the third and second spot respectively.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The S 63 AMG uses fuel-saving technologies like Eco start/stop system that automatically shuts off the engine at stoplights and other idle situations. The ECO Start/Stop system can also be shut off by the driver at any time.

The S 63 does surprisingly well and delivers 17 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. With its massive 21-gallon fuel tank, you can easily take those cross country trips without worrying about stopping often.

The S 63 AMG is surprisingly fuel-efficient despite of the biggest engine and delivers fuel economies like the V6 powertrains in the rivalry. The BMW M760i is the least fuel-efficient because of the highest curb weight.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Interior

Like its hand-built Biturbo powertrain, Mercedes-Benz has left no stones unturned in its quest for extreme opulence. Draped in sumptuous leather, the lavish interior of the S63 sedan exudes luxury and extravagance. Pretty much every component is electrically controlled, double-glazed or net-connected. The 12-way power-adjustable (heated and ventilated) is exceptional with active bolsters and host of massage options.

Rear seats do not come with massage function but offer a high level of comfort. The adjustable lumbar support and active side bolster called the Magic Body Control, which can be set to increase support while cornering to prevent lateral movement. No one will ever complain about the legroom as the designers left pretty dimensions when it comes to personal space.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Competition

BMW M760 I Sedan Vs Mercedes-Benz S 63

The M760 I is a great car by BMW M division which, akin to the AMG, is the Motorsport division of BMW. It is powered by a massive 6.6-litre turbocharged V12 that produces 601 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. At a significantly lower price, the BMW has presented a daunting contender to the S63 AMG S 63.

2020 BMW 760i Sedan

As typical of any M-car, the M760 inherits the DNA of delivering sheer driving pleasure. The M760 is highly practical and fun to kick out the rear end around corners. The comfort features may not rival the plush interior of the Merc, but the price difference can justify the lack thereof. It’s hard to go wrong either way.

Maserati Quattroporte GTS Vs Mercedes-Benz S 63

You want a Ferrari-Derived engine with Italian design at a budget price point than nothing is better than the GTS. Powered a four-litre turbocharged V6 the Quattroporte makes 523 bhp and scouts to 60 mph under 5 seconds. The engine is mated to a ZF sourced seven-speed automatic transmission.

2020 Maserati Quattroporte GT S

It lacks behind in driving dynamics and luxury when compared to the AMG S 63. The performance is not as lively as the German-made horse. Overall the AMG is the clear winner here.

Porsche Panamera Turbo Vs Mercedes-Benz S 63

The Porsche Panamera Turbo is a car that offers handling abilities that rivals are yet to match. The Porsche’s interior follows the minimalistic German approach and for some, it might not be luxurious as you would expect from a flagship. But the way all of it has been put together gives you the feeling that this car is meant to last very long.

2020 Porsche Panamera Turbo

The Panamera is a daily driver thanks to its neat and solidly built cabin, decent ride and manageable dimensions but it can easily turn into a track monster. If luxury is your staple than go with the Merc otherwise people whole love twisty roads can go with the Panamera.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Final Verdict

8.9/10

Many of you not know, but the V 8 S 63 AMG is faster than the S 65 AMG, yes faster than a V12. The most expensive S class sedan inherits the racing legacy AMG stable and combines it with utmost luxury.

The mammoth size has an imposing presence on the streets, yet the car feels agile on corners and fun to drive. The hefty price tag of $169,450 and it has got everything the S-Class stands for, it is hard to argue against it.
