When we talk about hot hatches, we can never forget about the hottest Japanese on the list the Civic Type R. Honda has recently announced the launch of its new and even hotter battleship, the 2020 Civic Type R. In 1997, the Civic was launched with a B16B engine which started grabbing a lot of attention of the JDM nuts. They understood the true capabilities of the engine and put it under the hood of their lightest car and hence the Type R was born.

Overall Rating

The famous hot hatch, for the year 2020 comes with an all-time favorite 2.0L, Inline 4 Cylinder turbocharged engine that produces a massive 306 HP @ 6500 Revs, which makes it one of the fastest cars among its arch-rivals the Subaru WRX STI and Volkswagen Golf GTI. This time the Civic takes the fight to the segment and gives them a run for their money.

The 2020 model, sits at a very practical price of $36,300 and be assured that this is money well spent. The Civic Type R serves to the craving of petrolheads for the smaller track-able cars. The hot hatch is very sorted after category for petrolheads as the cars are very track focussed around a track, very practical for city use and easy to maintain as a daily driver.

2020 Honda Civic Type-R Features

8.0/10

The Type R is the top of the line variant of the standard Civic and comes as a single variant with all the options added as standard. The Type R is a crazy looking beast and does stand out clearly from the standard model. The looks of the Type R are a bit controversial though but when it comes to the crazy powerplant inside the hood, the crazy looks do promote the crazy performance of the car itself.

This time, in the arsenal, we get more performance features like the Limited Slip Diff for the front axel, adaptive dampers, and a 4-piston Brembo braking system over the standard Civic. Being offered as a single variant, the Type R comes as a no-nonsense vehicle and holds all the capabilities to take down its rivals with ease.

What we Recommend

The Civic Type R comes only as a single variant. All the features from the top of the line Civic Standard are already present in the Type R as standard along with the additional performance parts. When compared to its rivals, the Civic is the best option available on the charts as you do as it is very decently priced at $35,700 and is offered in a single trim and makes the selection process a lot easier. The Subaru WRX STI is priced at $36,595 and the VW’s Golf GTI is placed at $31,795. Therefore the Type R being the fastest among the trio, lies right in the middle of the price bracket thus giving it the best value for your money.

2020 Honda Civic Type-R Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The hot hatch territory has also evolved with time. When Mark 1 was released back in 1997, the concept was to put a bigger engine in a lighter body and that was all the magic that was needed. But as the times have changed, the demand for power has also increased. Though the 2020 Civic Type R weighs a lot more now, it surely still captures the essence of the Mark 1. The Civic is still offered with a compact size body with the power being sent to the front end.

The heavyweight Civic with all the features weighs, 3110 lbs it still manages a sprint from zero to 62 MPH in a mere 5 seconds flat, while the Subaru with its 2.5L Boxer engine does come second with 5.7 seconds to reach the same speeds. The 2.0L Straight line 4 turbocharged engine kicking out a massive 306 HP @ 6600 Revs and in turn generating a whopping 295 lb-ft torque @ 2500 revs has great power reserves and the manual 6-Speed transmission makes the car a lot of fun. This time the Civic comes equipped with high-performance parts like Limited Slip Differential for the front wheels, 13.8-inch ventilated & cross-drilled front brake discs, Lightweight single-mass flywheel and adaptive dampers. The hatch produces

When compared to its rivals, the Civic Type R gets a limited slip differential in the front to distribute the power equally between the two wheels and the low profile 20 inch alloy wheels, make the Civic stick at the corners and never let’s go of the grip. The Subaru gets a slightly more horsepower out of that boxer engine at 310 HP @ 6000 revs as compared to the Type R’s 306 HP @ 6500 revs, but the lighter Civic feels more nimble around the corners and sticks really good.

Civic Type R How Fast is it

The new Civic is a combination of practicality combined with performance. The Civic does get a 4 cylinder inline turbocharged engine that goes like maniacs and can keep up with a car of a higher caliber easily on the tracks.

The Subaru does get a bigger engine and an all-wheel drive system but being only 2 wheel drive, the Civic saves around 100 lbs on its curb weight and boy does it take down everyone on the rivalry list. All the performance for less than $40,000 makes the Civic a great choice for a hot hatchback.

Civic Type R Ride and Handling

The Civic is a very well known name amongst the youngsters and adults alike. The flamboyant styling, tuned voice notes make the Type R get a lot of attention. The styling might take a bit of getting used to, but that said, the 2020 model still captures the soul of the Mark 1 Civic Type R. The car still feels nimble on its feet, sticks to the corners at mind-blowing speeds and does not let you go into the bushes. The car uses a Helical Limited Slip Differential in the front that does an impeccable job of keeping the car under control.

Civic Type R Braking Performance

The hot hatch comes equipped with 13.8-inch ventilated and cross-drilled front Brembo disk brakes as standard. Compared to rivals, the Type R has the biggest brake size in the segment and these brakes are more than sufficient to deaccelerate the vehicle from 70 MPH to standstill in a mere 142 ft, which again is the shortest distance among the trio.

With 13.8-inch Brembos in the front coupled with a firm suspension system and low profile tires as standard, the car really runs in perfect sync when you are out bashing it around the track. All the tech along with the lightweight of the Civic makes it an amazing track-capable car.

2020 Honda Civic Type-R Fuel Economy

9.0/10

The 2020 Type R does have an appetite when it comes to fuel economy but the nerd tech of Honda has given it a special hidden weapon that comes bearing the tag “Earth Dreams” located right next to the VTEC badge in the engine bay. The high performance vehicle is not the most fuel efficient option available but in case you want a daily driver that you can compromise a little bit with fuel efficiency for its track performance, the Type R does not let you down there as well. Switch it to the Eco mode and you can get up to 22 MPG in the city. Which is really not bad for a car of this aesthetics.

The Type R does fairly well as a daily driver as well. The VW Golf GTI trumps the trio with the best fuel efficiency but at the same time, has the lowest power as well. Therefore considering the performance and practicality for daily usage, the Civic does the best overall as with the 2020 Type R, you get the performance as well. There is no trade-off between power and efficiency.

2020 Honda Civic Type-R Interior

7.0/10

The Civic Type R is a performance version of the standard Civic which has a fan following among the adults for its comfort and accessibility and among the youngsters for the capabilities in performance charts. Type R shares the basic design of the cockpit from the standard Civic but as crazy it is on the outside, the story is continued on the inside as well.

Once you step inside, you will find a lot of usage of red color which does make sense as it is a performance vehicle. The new Civic gets three touch screens in place of the conventional gauges and the key features, essential for the driver are clearly displayed on the central screen and are very user friendly. To maintain the young fan following, the infotainment system does provide you all the features like Apple Car Play, Android Auto and satellite. The only complaint can be that due to the lack of physical buttons for the infotainment, it can be a little irritating to use while you are on the move. But again, there are all the controls on the steering wheel as well so it does help you to get the job done.

To add more to the practicality part, the Civic comes with a seating capacity of 4. The rear seat is the same one that you get in the standard Civic. Whereas the front seats are standard to the Type R only. The front seats are sporty bucket seats that can be electrically adjusted and have carbon fiber finish to give a more sporty feeling. In the rear, you can seat two adults but there is a bit of compromise in the rear legroom. But worry not, still you can use the Type R without any hassles for carrying more people.

The cabin quality is well built and Honda’s have always been famous for their practicality. When we compare the Type R to its rivals, all the three have almost similar cabin dimensions but the Type R aces the trio with its build quality.

Civic Type R Infotainment Features

The 2020 Type R gets the same infotainment screen from the previous model but does come loaded with a string of features like Apple Car Play, Android Auto, Sattelite, inbuilt navigation and many more. There are a lot of driving aids available as well.

The lack of conventional buttons in the center console makes it a little bit difficult to use while on the move but there are standard control buttons in the steering so it can make up for that there as well.

Civic Type R Utility

Type R is a standard Civic on steroids. The most intriguing part about the Type R is its practicality. While giving you mind blowing performance numbers, the Type R proves to be one of the strongest contenders in the ground in terms of its utility as well. The Type R comes equipped with all the comforts that you would expect from a Honda on a daily basis. You get comfortable seats, good legroom for long family trips, a decent mileage and the biggest boot among the competition

As compared to the Subaru WRX STI’s 12 ft3 and Golf GTI’s 17.4 ft3 cargo capacity, the Type R has the biggest boot amongst the trio and that too by miles. The Subaru’s complex All Wheel Drive system does rob a lot of space in the trunk thus making it the smallest among the three.

2020 Honda Civic Type-R Exterior

7.0/10

The exterior design of the Civic Type R has always been a bit controversial. The car, just by the looks will give you the impression that it is made for performance. Though you can still find the body lines of its standard sibling, the Type R is easily distinguishable from the standard one. The flamboyant nature of the car like the big wing at the rear, three exhaust pipes center mounted in the extreme body kit, surely makes the car a head-turner. But again, it totally depends on personal choice that how do you like your car to be. If you are into the flamboyance, then the new Type R will surely get your attention otherwise it might take a little getting used to.
