2020 Honda Civic SI is part of the 8th SI and the 10th Civic generation. It is the car that helped Honda gain a foothold in the U.S markets. The Civic has been around since the '70s and never left the US since. This year the Civic SI has a more aggressive design similar to that of the Type-R. The Type-R is more powerful than its SI sibling.

Introduced in the '70s, the Civic soon became a household name and made Honda one of the best selling manufacturers. It was the years when the Nixon government caused. Anyways let's not deviate, the people were broke and did not want the American muscle. Honda answered this demand with its fuel-efficient alternative.

Honda has created a loyal fan base due to the reliability that it's owners experience. This year Honda has given the Civic SI a much aggressive design style which is likely to attract more audiences. Looks apart the interior has also been updated with a newer infotainment system that is more user-friendly and offers more features.

With the decrease in the drive ratio, the acceleration of the SI is the best it has been. The same inline-four powers this reliable beauty making decent power for an everyday commuter. The list of standard features has also been increased which makes the SI a much better overall package than its predecessors. This also gives it an edge among its competitors.

The Civic SI now has an extended list of standard features. Some of the optional features in the past have been integrated into the standard list of features. The difference among the tires is that of the All-Weather and Summer tires on both trims. The base trim has an optional selection of the Summer tires which seems redundant nonetheless.

The two trims on offer for the Civic SI Coupe basically have the same set of standard features. The only difference that remains between the two is that of the tires. Both trims don't have any difference in terms of cost. The Summer Tires trim provides a set of summer tires instead of the All-weather tires that are available on the base trim.

2020 Honda Civic Si Coupe Engine and Performance

6.0/10

Replacing the peaky, high-revving i-VTEC motors, the Civic Si is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. While it might not seem like a lot on paper, it is enough to carry the car through all kinds of roads. This inline-four turbo powertrain delivers good muscle throughout the rev range, with plenty of low-end torque to get you moving from a stop.

Additionally, the 6-speed manual gearbox offers smooth and fast operation. The engine powers the front wheels through a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission. The shifts are short and slick, and the lever slides into position with gusto, although the clutch pedal needs a little getting used to. Si also benefits from a helical limited-slip differential and adjustable 2-mode adaptive shock absorbers.

The turbocharged engine produces a great symphony with the center-mounted exhaust. There is a bit of turbo-lag too at lower revs, and to feel the power you need to drive close to the redline.

The WRX is the clear winner here due to the larger engine and higher power outputs. The Civic follows suit in terms of power but has the smallest engine. Elantra has a slightly bigger engine but makes lower power than the Civic. The Mazda gets the biggest engine which the least powered out of the lot.

Acceleration

Honda Civic with a very lightweight and high on power can zap from 0 to 60 mph quickly. Soon after hitting the throttle of the Civic SI, one can feel the power rushing to the front tires of the coupe and pushing the vehicle with a great force. It's one of those cars that rides equally well on the track or the streets. With the change in the gear ratios, the SI coupe is faster than it has been in its previous iterations.

Acceleration is linear with a sudden surge of power at the high RPMs. The performance wouldn’t blow you away, and it isn’t the point of the car. Civic SI an ideal choice for people having a major concern for the environment. ts annual emission of 5.5 tons is just outstanding and makes it a green car with certain performance capabilities.

The Civic houses the smallest engine out of its rivals but takes the second spot in terms of 0-60 which is impressive. The fastest car here is the Subaru WRX. Mazda 3 has the biggest engine out of the lot but has the slowest 0-60 time which is shocking. The Civic also has the lowest emissions form all the other competition.

Brakes

Due to the efficient braking system and the lightweight body of the vehicle. The Coupe decelerates responsively with a little push of the brake pedal. Whether it’s a casual turn or a surprise red light, the stops are straight and confident aspiring. Instead of developing its own brakes, Honda borrows the brakes on the SI from Brembo. The brakes part a sense of reliability and credibility to halt entirely in any situation. The Sensing Suite provides the driver with some assistance with autonomous braking.

The size of brakes employed by the rivals is almost the same as that of the Civic SI. However, their curb weights are significantly higher, which causes a certain lack of effectiveness in their braking abilities. The Civic is the quickest to halt followed by the WRX.

Ride and Handling

We have already discussed enough how fun the Civics are to drive. The SI variant gets stiffer suspensions and differentials which reduce body roll. The steering wheel has been re-worked on and provides better feedback. This car ensures the driver has experiences sheer joy while driving around. Be it straight or winding roads the SI handles just as well. It strikes the perfect balance between ride and handling, managing to ease out the bumps as well as providing strong cornering abilities.

2020 Honda civic si coupe Smooth handling

At low rev range, the power delivery is not at its best but soon hitting the mid-rev range, the coupe displays its aggressive behavior. The steering is precise and you can take corners with enthusiasm, just take some open roads. In Sports mode, the suspensions get stiffer and the electronic steering assist reduces allowing the driver to get more experience. The adaptive damper system and MacPherson strut suspension mitigate bumps for a smooth ride.

2020 Honda Civic Si Coupe Fuel Economy

6.0/10

The '70s was the time of the little depression where the Nixon government had its controversial stint that managed to bring the economy down. Due to which the market demand for the American muscles fell and created a new demand for fuel-efficient cars. Enter the Honda Civic, it was a 3 door hatchback in the early '70s and had a design style that attracted people. Civic has been a reliable, fuel-efficient and total fun to drive vehicle. The fuel efficiency figures of the Civic have dropped this year due to the power increase in the engine. The reliability and fuel efficiency of the Civic has been its biggest sell point.

The Hyundai Elantra has the best fuel efficiency figures out of all these budget performers. The Civic SI and the Mazda 3 have similar MPG figures but the Civic might return better miles on the gallon on highways. The WRX does not come close to the efficiency figures of its competition.

2020 Honda Civic Si Coupe Interior

8.5/10

The Civic SI has an impressively spacious cabin made with high-end material. It is more like a compact Accord because of the quality of interiors. The interior is made with intelligent craftsmanship to maximize cabin space. The headroom does take a hit due to the sloping roofline making it difficult for taller people to accommodate the rear seats.

2020 Honda civic si  coupe Front seats

There are sports seats in the front row. A split-folding bench at the rear section of the coupe accounts for its total passenger capacity of 5 people. The seats both in the rear and the front accommodate people very comfortably.

The interior gets a new design layout with the red trims that run all around the interior. The red accents are stitched on the seats. The sporty black and red combo don't end there. The a/c vents and the steering wheel have a red-colored lining around them.

Interior Features

The 2020 Honda Civic SI, like all other Civics we’ve come to know and appreciate, also aims to be as user-friendly as possible. Some most relevant convenience features include:

Smartphone compatibility is offered via Apple CarPlay and Andriod Auto which makes it even easier to use. Bluetooth is also available for all those that still prefer it.

Infotainment Features

Cargo Capacity

The length of the Civic SI Coupe is not as much as the Civic sedan. The interior does take a few hits because of this. The headroom available is lowered without much compromise on the rear seats. The space in the cabin is achieved by sacrificing some of the boot space. This is why the trunk storage in the Coupe is not all that accommodating.

Civic has received the most aggressive design styling ever. Honda has churned out the best aspects of all the Civic line-up and added them to the SI. It has borrowed cues from the Type-R Civic for the front grille design. The car looks fresher than ever with the edgy styling. The headlights are wider and longer which is similar to the Civic Touring models from the higher segment. The headlights give the car a much meaner look and enhance visibility at night as well.

2020 Honda civic si coupe 3 quarter view

The sides get much more defined lines making the SI differentiable and much more sporty. The side skirts are wider and look all the more alluring. All this is amplified by the 18icnh wheels that come with all-wheel tires on the base model. The blacked-out rims add more design points to the Civic making it look even more eye-pleasing.

On the rear end, the spoiler looks extremely well sought out. The taillights are more accentuated and give the rear a visible character. The diffuser houses the single central exhaust which is very Type-R again. The central exhaust layout is very unorthodox but gives the Civic a very differentiable look.

What are those eye-catching features?

The exterior features that make this Civic SI look not-so-hot yet not-too-cool are:

  • Matte black 18-inch machine-finished alloy wheels
  • Clearcoat paint
  • Body-colored front/rear bumper
  • Black side window trim
  • Body-colored door handles
  • Body-colored power heated side mirrors
  • Light tinted glass
  • Fully galvanized steel panels
  • Wing spoiler
  • Black grille
  • Front fog lamps
  • Fully automatic projector beam halogen daytime running headlamps

2020 Honda Civic Si Coupe Competition

Honda Civic SI Coupe vs Hyundai Elantra Sport

The Elantra sport does tick many boxes off the competition comparisons against the Civic. Except in terms of performance, the Elantra Sport does seem to slack off. The slightly bigger engine on the Elantra does not produce enough numbers to keep up with the Civic.

2020  Hyundai Elantra Sport

Honda Civic SI Coupe vs. Mazda 3

Civic has the Mazda beat in every aspect here. The bigger 2.5L engine on the Mazda cannot compete with the 1.5L engine of the Civic which shows the prowess the Civic holds. Costing just a bit more than the Mazda the Civic here should be the better pick out of the lot.

2020 mazda 3

Honda Civic SI Coupe vs. Subaru WRX

The Civic trails behind the WRX in terms of performance by a short margin. But what did it cost Subaru to achieve such powers? Fuel efficiency! The fuel efficiency on the WRX is not comparable to the Civic in any means. While the performance is only a tad bit lower. The Honda might prove to be a better pick here.

2020 Honda Civic Si Coupe Final Verdict

The Civic is a pocket-friendly everyday racer. It produces enough power to keep one excited and is pure fun to drive, be it the race tracks or the streets. Not many mid-segment performance cars give the features and practicality that the Civic SI Coupe offers. Some drink up the fuel others lack in terms of comfort or features. The price bracket in which the Civic sits makes it the best suited for youngsters or people that just want some sporty daily driver.
