Not affected by the number of recalls pickup trucks are plagued with, Sierra has always been the first choice of truck heads as stats show that this truck is the least recalled truck in the competition. There is no denying that GMC has aced the styling of the Sierra 1500 indeed. It is easily one of the most handsome trucks out there in the market. Moreover. the balance between the performance and fuel figures of the trucks make the package even more bountiful. Be it looks, fuel efficiency or even performance, the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 seems to have got a hold on all of it.

While base Sierra gets optional vinyl interiors that can be hosed down after a hard day's work, higher trims get exquisite leather upholstery and even wireless charging pad.

The GMC Sierra is a potent truck with a doubt. The interior is on point while the exterior does leave a lot to be desired but it does what advertises to do and that is work in the field and haul heavy loads without a hiccup. If you're in the market for a work truck, you can't go wrong with the GMC Sierra 1500.

That said, an all-new 2020 GMC Sierra debut is imminent and like its cousin - the 2020 Chevy Silverado, the new Sierra will be much lighter, faster, more efficient, more capable and most importantly - will come with a turbo-diesel engine. However, if you can' t wait that long, the current GMC Sierra is still a great truck.

2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Engine and Performance

With two available throaty and roaring naturally aspirated V6s offering supreme tractability and slick-shifting 6-speed or 8-speed automatic, the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 powertrain is hard to fault. This combined with supple suspension and high-speed composure makes the GMC Sierra 1500 an excellent freeway cruiser.  However, the Sierra hates curvy roads and some modern trucks offer better handling. The Sierra Denali with Magnetic Ride Control dampers improve things considerably but comes with a hefty price tag. There is a dearth of Heave-Ho though. Equip the Sierra properly, and you can pull segment beating 12,500 pounds.

The base engine is good for producing 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque. The figures are modest, to say the least. But they surely make the truck feel lethargic on open roads. In comparison with rivals, the GMC Sierra 1500 sits at par with the Chevy Silverado to take the top spot when it comes to both engine capacity and performance.

The truck takes time to gather momentum but never feels like it's pushing too hard. In comparison, the GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevy Silverado 1500 both claim the top spot again with identical quarter mile and 0-60 mph timings. That' s plenty fast for such a hefty vehicle. It hits the sweet spot between performance and efficiency with a 0-60 time of 6.6 seconds.

Ride and Handling

Like any truck with leaf-spring rear suspension, the 2018 Sierra 1500 has a somewhat harsh ride especially when the bed is lightly loaded. Resist the temptation to get those flashy 20 or 22-inch wheels - they make matter worse. If you are very particular about ride quality, check out the air-suspension equipped Ram 1500. Alternatively, if you can spend over $50,000, get the GMC Sierra Denali with Magnetic Ride System - the kind of hardware one expects in a Corvette. Its damper is filled with magnetic fluid that can change their viscosity within milliseconds when the sensors sense a change in road condition.

This alters the stiffness of dampers and helps the Sierra adapt itself for comfortable cruising or spirited driving - neat. The GMC Sierra 1500 is a big vehicle and it behaves like one too. The truck is at its best when .cruising on a highway a moderate speed, something it does like the back of its hand. It is not made with cornering at crazy speeds in the mind which is the reason why it shouldn't be done in the first place. The truck does behave erratically over uneven surfaces and the issue is worsened when low profile tires are installed.

Braking

The GMC Sierra 1500 features a set of 13.0-inch brake rotors in the front and a set of 13/6 inch rotors in the rear. Even with its substantial curb weight, the truck is able to stop from 60 mph to a standstill in an impressive 134 feet.

Towing Capacity

Trucks are used to haul loads and the towing capacity is absolutely paramount while one goes looking out for a truck to buy. The GMC Sierra 1500 is able to tow a load of up to 8900 lbs hooked to its back. The Ford F150 fares only marginally better at 9100 lbs but it still takes the 1st position amongst its rivals.

The most efficient GMC Sierra 1500 is the one equipped with the base 4.3L V6 rated at 18/24/20 for city/highway/combined. Keeping in mind that the GMC Sierra 1500 weighs almost 2 tons, the truck is able to return an impressive 20 MPG combined. The Ford F-150 XL is able to better the Sierra by almost 5 mpg at 25 mpg combined and it also takes away the top spot amongst its rivals.

2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Interior

7.5/10

The Sierra has one of the best interiors among full-size trucks - even in base trim. While it costs a bit more compared to the similar Silverado 1500, it does boast better fit and finish and high-quality materials. Higher trims are especially luxurious and the Sierra 1500 Denali can even give a good scare to the product engineers of luxury marques. The GMC Sierra Crew Cab can seat up to 6-passengers with the front bench seats (the Sierra Denali seats only 5 though). The front seats are exceptionally roomy with huge 45.2-inch legroom and offer good support even for a tall frame. However, the driving position is weirdly off-centre.

2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab Seating

The legroom and headroom on the truck is something that will make even the taller guys happy. Overall, it is arguably the most spacious truck amongst its rivals. However, the driving position is weirdly off-centre.

Infotainment

The base trim on the GMC Sierra 1500 comes loaded with a 3.2-inch monochromatic display while the top-end trim comes with a 5.2-inch colour display. The MMI is simple and neat and displays all the required information directly on the click of a button. The overall interface is laggy and does take a while to register user inputs.

Cargo volume

Cargo volume is one of the most important parameters on which a truck is judged on. The GMC Sierra 1500 features a cargo volume of 61.60 cube.feet which is relatively modest with respect to other rivals in the segment. The Ford 150 features the largest boot in the segment at 65.2 cube feet.

2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Exterior

The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 looks like a typical full-size pick-up truck - it' s huge, blocky and has a massive grille. The Sierra Denali gets especially chrome heavy grille and huge 20-inch wheels. There is now an All-Terrain X package available in 4WD Sierra XLT with all-black exteriors, dark wheels, and a bed-mounted sports bar.

2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab 3 Quarter View

All Sierra come with standard LED accent lights - a pleasantry for spending a little more than the similar Silverado 1500. Higher trim also gets damped tailgate eliminating the dreaded tailgate slam. However, the now common passive entry with pushbutton start is not on offer in the GMC Sierra - it looks like GMC intends to give you some old-school experience - at least while entering your truck.

2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Safety

The GMC Sierra 1500 has not been crash tested by any major crash-testing agencies yet. The set of standard safety features include dual-stage frontal airbags, lane assist, and forward collision alert and tire pressure monitoring system amongst others. There is definitely a lack of active safety features on the Sierra 1500.

  • AIR BAGS Dual-stage frontal for driver and front passenger with Passenger Sensing System
  • LED DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS
  • LANE KEEP ASSIST AND FORWARD COLLISION ALERT Included and only available with Enhanced Driver Alert Package. On SLE, requires RegularCab mode
  • TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM Does not monitor spare tire

Chevy Silverado 1500 vs GMC Sierra 1500

The Chevy Silverado 1500 is a kinsman of the Sierra 1500 truck. They share the same powertrain, chassis and even design elements to an extent. The Silverado, on one hand, features a lot of cosmetic look good exterior components while the GMC Sierra takes a more rugged approach. Hence, this one is totally up to the preference of the customer since they are virtually similar trucks.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Ford F-150 GMC Sierra 1500

The Ford F-150 just like theSierraIerra 1500 takes a very hands-on approach to work. It is fine as a work truck but that's all it is. The exterior is boring while the interior is borderline tacky. The GMC Sierra 1500 features a much more comfortable interior which makes it a better truck.

2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Final Verdict

If you want the capability of a modern full-size pickup truck but want something a bit classier, the 2020 GMC Sierra will impress you. Starting with the exterior that' s sleeker looking than any other pick-up in the market, the classy feeling continues all-the-way to the tastefully built and assembled interiors. All these come at a price that' s slightly higher than its corporate cousin - the Silverado 1500.

If you're in the market for a work truck, you can't go wrong with the GMC Sierra 1500.
