Fiat 500 is a small hatchback with a retro design. It’s a city car which got significantly updated in the year 2015. The new and improved 500 gets more personalized options and excellent fuel efficiency. There are 2 engines for the Fiat 500. The POP and Lounge trim level gets a 1.4-Liter I4 MultiAir 16-valve engine with 101 horsepower and 98-pound feet of torque. Abarth trim gets 1.4-Liter I4 16 Valve MultiAir Turbo engine with 160 horsepower and 170-pound feet of torque.

The competition offers more power, better features and better fuel economy and whilst purchasing a car these features matter the most.

Fiat POP has a peppy 1.4-Liter engine but it’s not a turbocharged one in the POP trim, it’s naturally aspirated. It does 0-60 mph in 9.8 seconds and completes the quarter-mile with a time of 14.9 seconds. The turbocharged powertrain, however, takes a little less 8.0 seconds to reach 60 mph and covering the quarter-mile in 15.0 seconds.

Ride and Handling

It can be called as a supermini which is very useful around town. It is easily manoeuvrable with decent visibility all around the car. The size plays an important role in the city driving where it is genuinely good. However, it’s not as sharp as some of its rivals because the suspension is just too soft. You can really feel the difference on the highway, where this car feels a little wiggly.

2020 Fiat 500 Hatchback
2020 Fiat 500 Hatchback Front View

The cabin is also not very well noise insulated which lets a lot of road noise inside the car at higher speeds. The steering is light and will merely present  you with any feedback. Hence, it will need some getting used to before you can take a turn with faith. The cabin will prevail quiet in the city, but once you are on the highway, the wind noise gets significantly loud.

Braking

Fiat 500 POP hatch weighs in at 2366 pounds which is considerably heavy. You cannot judge and tell that kind of weight due to its exterior appearance. It has 10.1 inches front ventilated discs and 9.4 inches at the back. The brakes work well but they are not performing one as they are standard in Abarth trim.

The Mini Hardtop two-door is the best when it comes to braking and just takes 108 feet to stop from 60 mph while the Chevrolet takes the second spot because of its lower curb weight.

2020 Fiat 500 Fuel Economy

Advancing its  way within the downtown transit, the 2020  Fiat 500 grants a mileage of 22 mpg, and on the  highways, the figure goes up to 30 mpg. The coupled fuel efficiency figure endures at 25 mpg. However, all other competitors have far better fuel efficiency totals.

Against the others, Fiat 500 and Honda Civic offer the best fuel economy figures and are identical to the Mini Cooper hardtop.

2020 Fiat 500 Interior

Fiat 500 interior looks very similar to the previous model, but it has been revamped to give way to a  new infotainment system. Fiat markets it as a 4-seater but in reality, it’s not a people carrier. Extremely tight space at the back makes it good for a 2-seater configuration. It has a passenger volume of 75.5 cu ft of space. It has a good amount of space in the front but the rear is unforgiving due to the short wheelbase.

The top trim offers heated front seats which are a cherished  addition. Moving on to the rear seats,  tall adults will find it difficult during a road trip.

In comparison, Honda Civic  has the best space upfront and also at the back. This is due to the fact that it’s the longest and tallest in the segment which gives it the best shoulder room up front and also in the rear. Mini and Ford are necks to neck in every department.

The outer shell widely remains constant from its forerunners. The round headlamps with the chrome whiskers  deliver an attractive front fascia. The arched roofline stretches all the way to the back bumper. The twin exhausts combine a pinch of sportiness to this otherwise very regular looking hatch.

2020 Fiat 500 Competition

Mini Cooper vs Fiat 500

Mini Cooper is one of the best hatchbacks out there. It’s quick, agile and surprisingly fuel-efficient. It has got power and excellent driving dynamics. Also, it has four seats which provide good comfort to passengers. Fiat 500 is only ahead in terms of price and the quirky looks it provides.

Both are icons in their own space, but it truly depends upon your choice. At Mini’s price point, you can easily get Fiat's performance version - Abarth that is more agile and has a zippy performance.

Chevrolet Spark vs Fiat 500

Fiat 500 and Chevy spark are offered at a similar price point with an equal amount of power. Both have 5-speed manual, very fuel-efficient and excellent city slickers. The only problem with Fiat is that it’s not a four-seater whereas spark is. In the performance section, Fiat is better than Spark.

Honda Civic Hatchback  Vs Fiat 500

The Civic needs no introduction. It is loved by everyone all across the world. The Civic Hatch continues this legacy and makes a strong case for itself to be considered as the best car in the segment. To start with, this car has the most powerful engine in the selected lot. The interiors are not as premium as the Mini, but it is more practical. It's also the most fuel-efficient car in the lot. Thus, it's very easy for us to recommend the Civic hatch over the Fiat 500, or any other car in the segment.

2020 Fiat 500 Final Verdict

Fiat 500 POP is not a completely new model form the previous one, but some upgrades make it a safer car. It has got new technology that can match much more advanced rivals. It's more affordable to buy and is comfortable for only two passengers.

Its iconic design is nostalgic and reminds of the rich heritage of this car. If you want looks, price friendly car, there are not many options that can match Fiat 500.
