Not much has changed with the 2020 Dodge Journey since it debuted back in 2009. It is a throwback that the time better forget. We although admire its longevity but there is no denying the fact that the Journey is behind the time in many ways. Go for it only if you want an affordable three-row of seating and nothing more.

The base inline-4 engine is truly disappointing and is paired with an outdated 4-speed automatic transmission. Full-size family SUVs are known for their practicality and also have the impressive stance of an SUV. The 2020 Dodge SUV promises both but making a mark in the highly populated SUV market, it's certainly going to prove a task for this car

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

To understand the Dodge as more of a value proposition, one has to change the perspective a little and look outside the segment it's trying to compete. Look at the Dodge as a people moving minivan masked to look like a mid-sized SUV offering decent features and then the base price too surprisingly makes sense.

But remember, it will only move people, certainly not hearts. It's hence advisable to reach deeper into your pockets and look at the competition. Big size for low bucks - that's what the 2020 Dodge Journey is about. It competes in the highly competitive mid-sized SUV segment but in reality, it is no competition at all.

2020 Dodge Journey Features

Dodge offers the Journey in standalone 2.4 liters inline-four engine.  The base SE is pretty essential and does not even have Bluetooth as a standard feature. Things don’t seem too better with the CrossRoad trim either. It  only has a few improvements over the former and some added creature comfort which is available in the base trim of most rivals.

Buyers on a tight budget should be satisfied with the Journey SE equipped with Popular Equipment and Connectivity packages that gets you Bluetooth, rear-seat ventilation, and overhead storage. However, the Crossroad equipped with Driver Convenience package offers the best value for money.

2020 Dodge Journey Engine and Performance

A base 2.4-liter inline-4, with 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque comes standard on all the trims. Mated to a 4-speed automatic the base engine is not only noisy but it also does not have enough zest to move the 4,000-pound crossover.

Yes, there's a 4-speed automatic in modern times and it's certainly best avoided. This set of engine and the gearbox drives the front wheels.

With the meager power figures of the lot, the Journey sits out of the field in this battle. When compared with rivals, it only falls behind by a small margin in terms of power and torque figures but its weight largely lets it down.

The base 2.4-liter inline-4 engine is woefully slow and takes good 10.4 seconds to make 0-60 making it the slowest in the class. The car might slow down further if you take it for a ride filled with passengers and stuff.

As the V6 powertrain is discontinued, the acceleration can not be better. Moreover, the gearbox makes matters worse with its unresponsive nature.

When compared to the competition, it's the slowest to 60 miles an hour and by quite a margin being a whole second and a half slower than the VW Tiguan which is the fastest in the competition here.

Ride and Handling

There are better things to say about Journey’s ride and handling. It handles winding roads perfectly although there is a lot of body roll around turns.  Take it out on the highway and you will find that it centers itself well by ignoring road imperfection.  Automatic transmission feels quick to upshift in most conditions while too slow to downshifts on the steep surface.

2020 Dodge Journey SUV Rear View

This SUV actually rides quite well. The suspension tunings are on the softer side which gives it impressive ride quality. Be it on broken tarmac or rough roads, you will have no problem going over most surfaces. However, a soft suspension means handling is compromised.

The 2020 Dodge Journey SUV looks quite sluggish in terms of acceleration with a brake size of 12.9 inches in the front and 13.0 inches ion the back, this 3818 lbs heavy minivan stops at a distance of 129 ft when traveling at a speed of 60MPH.

The brakes feel firm even after repetitive use and the car nosedive a bit while hard braking. But please be aware that there is the weight acting against the car.

Curb weight(lbs) 3818 3956 3704 3777
60-0 MPH (ft.) 129 126 130 134

The brakes aren't the best in the competition either scoring only a little better than the Sorento to secure itself the second position in the comparison. The Tiguan comes to dead stop from 60 mph in the least distance at 134 ft .  GMC Acadia weighs a lot but surprisingly impresses with its stopping power.

2020 Dodge Journey Fuel Economy

The Journey seems too far to compete with the best when it comes to fuel economy. It gets the worst EPA rating in the class with the base engine scoring 19 mpg city, 25 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined.

The underpowered engine has to pull quite some bulk for its size which accounts for its low fuel efficiency.

Mpg city mpg 19 21 21 22
Mpg highway mpg 25 26 28 27
Mpg combine mpg 21 23 24 24

The Volkswagen Tiguan fares the best in fuel efficiency with 22 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. It's closely followed by the Kia Sorento. The GMC Acadia just slightly edges over the Dodge in fuel efficiency making the Dodge the least efficient car in the comparison.

2020 Dodge Journey Interior

The interior has been refurbished for the 2020 Dodge Journey. It gets improved cabin highlighted by a soft-touch rich looking dashboard along with Dodge’s three-spoke corporate steering wheel. Seats are not that spacious as compared to others in the class.

2020 Dodge Journey SUV Front Seats

The Journey comes in 5 seats on optional 7 seat configuration. While the middle row is well-sized for three adults, you need to push it quite back to have sufficient legroom which then compromises the third row leaving it for the kids only. It's still not as good as the competition in the second row as all the other cars offer more legroom and are wider which means they can seat three people more comfortably.

However, the first two rows are comfortable enough to hold adults while the third row boasts enough space for kids. The infotainment system is user-friendly but the biggest negative of the Dodge Journey is the shrunken cargo space despite its big size.

The Dodge Journey is a highway hauler and your family will feel at ease during a long road trip. The car keeps its control on wobbly pavements and even on the rough terrains. Cabin noise is minimal but the slow-reacting transmission gets noisy while climbing steep hills. Adjustable seats make up for the cramped legroom in the second row. Drivers' seats also get a six-way power adjustment with manual recline.

Interior Features

Although a barebone vehicle, the few highlights of the 2020 Dodge Journey's exterior are:

  • Perforated leather upholstery with red stitching
  • Heated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Premium audio system with a subwoofer
  • Tri-zone automatic climate control
  • LED interior lighting
  • Rear entertainment package

The Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system is one of the best in the industry. It's slick and easy to use with navigation and radio. The graphics are good too. The rearview camera which is a standard feature on most cars these days, however, comes as an optional extra. There is also a rear entertainment package that comes as an optional extra and is quite a boon in this segment.

  • USB Port
  • A six-speaker audio system
  • DVD Player
  • A 115-volt power outlet

Cargo Space

Cargo capacity is below average for a vehicle this size. The Journey has 10.7-cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 37-cubic feet behind the second row and 67.7-cubic feet overall. These figures put together a bleak future for the car as the rivals offer far better cargo capacity than the dodge. There are storage compartments under the seats and the front passenger seat folds down providing space for longer items.

With 3nd row folded (ft.cube) 37.0 41.7 38.0 33.0
With All Seats folded (ft.cube) 67.6 79 73.0 65.7

Is it any surprise that the Dodge is not the best even in the cargo capacity competition? A little better than the Tiguan, it comes third in cargo volume. There are some cargo nets and an under the floor storage area in the boot which is an  added perk.

2020 Dodge Journey Exterior

The Journey has begun to show its age now. Being a decade old, there is little that has changed over time. It is utilitarian and wagon-like rather than an imposing SUV. It seems as if it could belong to fleet cars of taxis maybe. The competition looks far more up to date, modern and stylish.

2020 Dodge Journey SUV 3 Quarter View

If not being noticed at all is your priority, the Dodge Journey would probably suit you the best. The GT offers some relief however with black allows wheels, black inserts in the headlamps, roof rails, and a black colored grille. Don't be excited because it's still not a head-turner.

Track width(in) F/R 61.8/62.3 64.5/65.5 64.3/64.7 62.2/61.8

The Journey is decently sized for its segment. Well, at least it's not falling short here as it has the maximum wheelbase. It's the least in width at 72.2 inches where the nearest competition is over 2 inches wider.

Exterior Features

While it isn't very apparent, Dodge has made some exterior improvements in the Journey for 2020. Some of these highlights include:

  • Body-colored door handles
  • Automatic headlamps with DRLs
  • Power foldable heated exterior mirrors
  • Intermittent front and rear windshield wipers
  • Chrome roof rails

2020 Dodge Journey Safety

The Dodge does not score well in safety regulations by both the NHTSA and the IIHS. That is expected given the Dodge's outdated roots and structure. The NHTSA gives it an overall score of 4 stars while the IIHS gives it a poor rating. The NHTSA gives the Dodge a 4-star rating in frontal crash and rollover deeming it particularly unsafe for the driver. This is a matter of concern really as five-star ratings from NHTSA are increasingly common.

A lot of safety equipment do not come as standard and are optional extras which really is a sore. Also, being a family vehicle, Dodge still hasn't offered any advanced safety features such as forward-collision warnings or automatic emergency braking. Where safety should have been the utmost priority considering it's a people mover, such inattention is disappointing.

Safety Features

  • Driver Air Bag and Passenger Air Bag
  • Front Head Air Bag and Rear Head Air Bag
  • Front Side Air Bag
  • 4-Wheel ABS
  • 4-Wheel Disc Brakes
  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Child Safety Locks
  • Traction Control

2020 Dodge Journey Competition

Dodge Journey vs Kia Sorento

There are hardly any criteria where the Dodge outruns the Kia. The Sorento is very spirited and lively, quick in its pace too. Being light on its foot, it's the most fuel-efficient in the comparison. The Kia certainly looks apart with its contemporary curves and sleek design and if its looks that we are talking about, it would be a shame to put the Dodge beside the Kia.

2020 Kia Sorento

The Sorento scores higher in standard features and build quality on the interior, also offering more legroom and shoulder room to its passengers. Honestly, these cars only share the segment and a similar engine, beyond which the Kia easily rolls over the Dodge.

Dodge Journey vs Volkswagen Tiguan

VW Tiguan impresses with the acceleration and better fuel economy but the Journey has more cargo space and better towing capacity. Tiguan bests the Journey in terms of second and third-row seating comfort as it offers better legroom.

2020 Volkswagen Tiguan

However, its lone engine feels lethargic while you get to opt for a V-6 engine in the Journey which performs better but it is no more available. With $2,000 more the Tiguan base feels a bit high priced with the kind of offering that it boasts. Dodge Journey, despite lacking in some areas offers better value for money.

Dodge Journey vs GMC Acadia

One of the Arch rivals, the GMC Acadia has a lot of things running in its favor against the Dodge in terms of performance. It beats the Dode in 0-60 timings, top speed, and some other parameters.

2020 GMC Acadia

However, when it comes to features, the Dodge has an edge over the GMC and the suspension is tuned better as well. Overall, ride quality on the Dodge is better in the Dodge.

2020 Dodge Journey Final Verdict

There is no better way of putting it but the 2020 Dodge Journey scores poor in almost everything that you would look for in a car in this segment. Other than a comfortable ride quality, a smart infotainment system, and a very competitive base price, there is nothing much to like about this car.

The competition, though starting from a higher price point, clearly is miles ahead in most regards. It becomes almost pointless comparing the Dodge with its competitors after a certain point of time.
