2020 Cadillac CT6 V Sedan Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: March 7, 2020

Duncan James

Automotive Journalist

The Cadillac CTS-V is a super sedan which can be a companion on weekdays and turn into a track monster on weekends. It can be thought as performance oriented variant of the CTS sedan with race-tuned suspension and supercar-like power. No American manufacturer designs car like caddy does and its handsome proportions demand a presence on road.

The CTS-V comes with the same supercharged V8 as the Corvette Z06 and boasts an incredible 640 horsepower that sends it from 0 to 60 mph in just 4 seconds. The cabin is encased by world-class material and craftsmanship. Its unimpressive rear-seat and cargo space and a confusing infotainment system are some of its downsides.

The CT6-V from Cadillac is almost mistaken for its regular sedan sibling. What makes it special you ask? What about the fact that it hosts one of the most sophisticated powerplants offered by the manufacturer that is at the pinnacle of its lineup of engines mated to a brand new Twin Clutch Auto that has blistering fast shifts. All in all a recipe for an adrenaline junkie who also wants the practicality of a 4 door sedan yet loves to go around the track at the weekends. The new CT6-V is probably the only car to do so at the given price point.

2020 Cadillac CT6 V Sedan Features

6.0/10

One of the biggest surprises that came along with the press release and the car that actually went on sale was its naming nomenclature. It was originally revealed as the V-Sport. A term which previously was used for the Cadillacs with more performance and upgrades than the usual V cars, which already were seriously full-blown performance machines with track capability. But then after it was released , Cadilliac changed the name to match its moderately sporty CT4-V and CT5-V sedans that never lived up to the V-badge . This leaves us thinking , how would the 2020 CT6-V ( Formerly CTS-V) would perform ? Is it a hardcore performance machine like the old V cars? Or is it what we’re expecting of the new V cars: a lightly upgraded version of the base car that isn’t particularly distinguished? As it turns out, the CT6-V sits between these two extremes to create a car that’s involving and exciting for the driver without compromising the CT6’s refinement and luxury.

The 2020 Cadillac CTS-V is only available in one trim which is a 4 door sedan featuring a 6.2-liter V8 engine with 10 speed automatic transmission. It is only available in rear wheel drive. CTS-V starts at $95,890 and Options include 16-way power-adjustable Recaro front seats ($2,300) and a performance data and video recorder ($1,600).

2020 Cadillac CT6 V Sedan Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The heart of the beast as everyone was expecting were the skin and flesh of the Corvette, but instead, they have decided to revisit the design table and build a handcrafted Dual cam Blackwing V8 cranking out a monstrous 550 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission ensures quick and precise shifts. Drivers will also savor the CT6-V's powerful sound.

The steering mounted magnesium paddle shifters can be used to manually shift the gears. Short gear ratio’s help to maintain optimum power in the whole rev range, making most of the supercharged engine. The performance algorithm shifting helps in selecting the right gear for you, whether you’re seeking fast lap times on the track or enjoying your favorite twisty road.

Acceleration

Wolf under a sheep’s skin is the perfect idiom for the Cadillac CTS-V. With its supercharged engine, the CTS-V can sprint to 60 mph from standstill in just 3.8 seconds. It has sport car shaming power and practicality of a family sedan, the biggest issue to find a road long enough to devour it. Launch Control manages tire spin to optimize full-throttle acceleration from a standing start and it tops out at 200 mph.

In spite of having such an amazing power, it somehow falls behind than all its major opponents (BMW and Audi). The Lexus GS –F stays on the last spot.

Ride and Handling

This Caddi was built with the driver in focus and not just being chauffered around so you can expect track-worthy handling. Thanks to its Magnetic Active Dampers, Ride Control is great. The sedan is also blessed with Active Rear Steer that allows you to take corners at blisteringly fast speeds with confidence. Meanwhile, traction is taken care of by the All-Wheel System. Activating the CTV-6's Track mode will enable you to experience its full performance potential. When checking out the 2020 Cadillac CT6-V, you'll immediately notice its aggressive exterior styling. A black mesh grille and sport grille help the CT6-V to make a bold statement. Unique 20-inch alloy wheels give the sedan a muscular stance. On the rear, quad exhaust finishers add an extra degree of sportiness. The trademark "V" badge lets onlookers know this is an exceptional ride. Cadillac offers the new CT6-V in five paint colors, including Red Horizon Tintcoat and Crystal White Tricoat.

Braking

The stopping power of the CTS-V is managed by the massive racing-inspired six-piston front, four-piston rear, fixed –caliper Brembo brakes with vented rotors. The pedal feel is firm and inspires unmatched confidence while cornering enthusiastically. The Brembo brake system provides durability, consistency and the capability for track-day performance.  Emergency braking only requires 106 feet’s to stop which is excellent for a luxury sedan.

6.5/10

The inside of the Cadillac CTS-V is handcrafted with performance-oriented execution. Its cabin is large and comfortable yet imparts a sporty feeling for pure exhilaration. It is no more your grandfather’s caddy with soft and cushy seats instead the optional Recaro racing is truly derived from the racetrack. An available suede microfiber steering wheel and shift knob complement the seating.

2020 Cadillac CT-6 V Sedan Front Seats

The 20-way power adjustable standard seats are exceptionally comfortable with ample amount of bolstering. They are wide, deep but not too soft which makes them perfect for long hours in the cabin. 2020 Cadillac CT6 V Sedan Competition

Cadillac CT6-V vs BMW M5 Sedan

The BMW M5 is the most popular sports sedan in this segment because of its dynamic performance and high quality interior. Between the CT6-V and M5, the Bimmer has better engine options and pinpoint handling. The 5 series is also ahead in terms of passenger space and cargo capacity. The 5 Series is a better car overall, but it costs thousands of dollars more than the CT6. If you can afford it, it’s worth the splurge.

2020 BMW M5 Sedan

Cadillac CT6-V vs Mercedes E63 S Sedan

Equipped with upscale materials, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class cabin is most pleasant in the class. The E-Class' infotainment includes a splendid 12.3-inch screen and very intuitive. You can get this Benz in a variety of body styles. It offers more spacious rear seats than the CT6- V.The E-Class has composed handling around corners, yet comes up short to the sporty character of CT6-V. The E class starts around which is heck cheaper than the CT6-V.

2020 Mercedes E63 S Sedan

Cadillac CT6-V vs Lexus GS F Sedan

Like the CTS V, the GS F is the high performance variant of the GS sedan. It is powered by a 5.0 liter V8 which produces 467 hp and 389 pound feet of torque. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and power is routed to the rear wheels. The Cadillac CTS-V is far ahead in terms of performance and tech features.

2020 Lexus GS F Sedan

2020 Cadillac CT6 V Sedan Final Verdict

The Cadillac CT6-V with 550 hp V8 engine has got some performance which is rivaled by few cars. The design has handsome curves and angles with large vertical LED lights and trapezoidal exhaust ports. It has a long list of standard features with a comfortable ride in spite of sophisticated suspension. Its cabin is well put together like some of its rivals. The Cadillac CT6-V is a good alternative to some of its German competitors.
