Automotive Journalist

The X5 is a vehicle that has been around for almost two decades now. It has been a successful vehicle from the time of its inception. The 2020 X5 is similar to the 2019 X5 only change made has been in the length and wheelbase. The major update that came was in the 2019 X5 which got the enlarged kidney grilles from that of the 2018 X5. The SUV is now better faster thanks to all the updates over the years.

The Bavarian Beast is in the best form it could ever be. The 2020 X5 is like Kobe in 2006, unstoppable with almost no competition. The list of luxury features on board can overshadow most of the competition the SUV faces. Performance-wise it is making the most power it ever did in the previous years.

The X5 does not feel it’s heavy or like its size while driving. It performs more like a tall-hatchback to put the entire experience in words. Putting the pedal to the floor the performance is instantaneous be it the gas pedal or the brake pedal. There is no lag or sluggish feel from the engine or brakes.

The 2 trims here are the sDrive40i and the xDrive40i where the difference is in the drive train which is the rear wheel and the all-wheel respectively. The SUV is filled with advanced tech and gizmos to enhance drive quality.

With multiple trim choices, confusion is oblivious. The xDrive40i is the better option here as it offers the all-wheel drivetrain. It also gets the driver-assist features that add to the overall driveability of the vehicle.

2020 BMW X5 Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The sDrive and xDrive variants are powered by the same engine and make similar performance figures. The drivetrain is the only difference between the two. Inline 6 powering this behemoth is refined and well-tuned. The engine is quirky and works how you want it to. All the power is available with a tap. Not many vehicles can entice the kind of excitement the X5 can.

The 8-Speed transmission does the Inline 6 justice and works really well to induce the best performance from the engine. The shifts are quick and precisely timed adding to the performance of the SUV. The shifts are so smooth that they can’t be felt and the ride is gradual.

The Jag has the smallest engine here which is an inline four-cylinder. All the other SUVs have a six-cylinder engine the only difference is in the layout. The BMW is an inline-six whereas the Acura and the Land Rover have the V6 engine. The Land Rover generates the most power followed by the BMW. A twist of the event here is the Jag making more power than the Acura which has a bigger engine.

Acceleration

The Inline 6 BMW engine is a really good performer. It is then tuned to achieve the kind of performance it currently gives. The performance by this SUV can give a lot of coupes and roadsters a run for their money without the compromise on the space and comfort.

The BMW is surprising with the acceleration it offers. It does not house the biggest engine but it has the best factory tuned engine that outperforms all the competition. The V6 on the Land Rover is expected to be as quick as the BMW but it stutters and ranks the lowest out of the lot followed by the Acura. The Acura has the biggest engine and is still not in the ranks. The Jag’s performance is astounding and deserves credit for making it to the second place with a smaller engine.

Ride and Handling

BMW is infamous for the sheer driving fun that every vehicle provides. The XDrive drivetrain adds to the driving factor of the vehicle. The size of the X5 can be intimidating but the drive experience is like that of a hatchback. The SUV turns swivels and then some more with the perfect control.

2020 BMW X5 SUV Front View

Drive modes in the bimmer are optimized for the variable feels of the vehicle. The ECO mode is much softer and returns the best fuel efficiency figures that are best suited for driving around the neighborhood or within the city. The comfort mode is more or less similar to the previous softer suspensions that can absorb most of the bumps on the road. The Sport and Sport Plus modes make the suspensions stiffer and unleash the engine performance which can whizz the SUV past traffic quickly.

Compared to its older variants the ride feels smoother. The engine performance is much more refined and the transmission is on point. All these things give it the confidence to reach speed limits in the blink of an eye.

Braking

With great speed comes greater brakes. It is a fact that the braking horsepower is more than the horsepower at the wheels to have that particular advantage of getting the vehicle to come to a halt. The brakes not only get the vehicle to stop but also provide the confidence to drive at high speeds with a sense of control.

BMW has tweaked the brake pads to ensure the discs don’t overheat due to constant braking. The pedals are softer and give an immediate response. It has the brake-by-wire system which helps with the autonomous braking. A heavy SUV does have a phenomenon where the front of the vehicle dips while braking called nose-dive, but there is no such thing while braking the X5.

The X5 has the biggest brakes among all the vehicles in this lineup. It’s no surprise that the BMW is quick to stop. The stopping figures for all the competition are not available. It wouldn’t be a surprise if BMW takes this round due to the larger brakes it houses.

2020 BMW X5 Fuel Economy

4.0/10

The X5 is a big vehicle and nonetheless returns good miles per gallon. The inline 6 is coupled with a smart 8-speed automatic transmission that ensures the best gear shifts to maintain the fuel economy.

BMW engineers have made the use of lighter components and ensured that the friction is minimum to have healthy engine performance. The emission norms by the government have made manufacturers pay extra attention to emissions which indirectly help fuel efficiency.

The Jaguar is just marginally better in the MPG figures when compared to the BMW. The Land Rover stands the lowest here, owing to its comparatively bigger engine. It’s a surprise to see BMW providing the MPG that it does in spite of the stellar performance engine and curb weight.

2020 BMW X5 Interior

8.1/10

Walk into the cabin of the X5 and the first thing that’s noticeable is the brilliant minimalist design of BMW. It is now a signature style by BMW which is subtle and yet gives that premium feel in the interiors. The interiors are made with high-quality leather. The upholstery is made with top-notch materials that are soft to the touch.

2020 BMW X5 SUV Dashboard

The driver seats provide good comfort and adjustability for the best and comfortable driving position. There is adjustable lumbar support for the driver which makes long journeys much more relaxed. The front seats are contoured with side support which gives extra support to the torso and grips the driver in the seat.

The rear seats are roomy and can accommodate 3 adults. It does not feel cramped or suffocating with ample headroom for the occupants. There is an option for a third row that can not accommodate adults. Children or pets, on the other hand, can easily fit in the third row.

The moonroof is a standard that can make night-driving seem like a trip among the stars. When coupled with the ambient light settings make it a very exquisite drive experience.

The Acura and Land Rover can accommodate more passengers due to the third row that comes as standard. The BMW has enough seating space and comfort with the 5 seat setting. The headroom and legroom in the BMW are better when compared to the Jaguar due to the better height and stance of the vehicle. The Jag feels cramped in the rear due to the declining roofline.

With the kind of segment the X5 competes in the features in the cabin are worth the mention.

Cargo Capacity

The X5 is a compact size SUV that does not compromise on space and comfort. It has enough space to store 4 large suitcases and 4 small size suitcases together. It would make family vacations easier with enough storage space for everyone.

The second row can fold down flat due to the 40-20-40 split seats to provide the extra storage space. If you wished to travel with your pony or cow, your wish just came true! Jokes apart the X5 has massive storage space with the rear seats folded flat down. Although, the optional third-row would take up the cargo space.

The X5 has always been a design marvel since its introduction. Its design and performance have been updated over the years. We can say that like fine wine the X5 has been refined over the years. The 2020 iteration has even more muscular design and bulkier out-look. There has been a slight increase in the wheelbase and length while retaining the height.

2020 BMW X5 SUV 3 Quarter View

The signature kidney grille now has an additional feature, the kidney grille now open up to allow air into the engine. This helps the engine stay cooler and increase the overall efficiency of the engine.

The dual exhaust with the chrome tips is like ornaments. The taillights are refreshed. The rear section of the X5 now looks bulkier and has a chiseled look to it.

2020 BMW X5 Competition

BMW X5 vs Acura MDX

The MDX is the competition for the Bavarian Gem from Japan. The current vehicles on offer don’t live up to the glory that JDM had created back in the early 2000s. The same holds true for the Acura. It doesn’t match up to the performance by BMW, the drivability is not as responsive either. The Acura also struggles with the luxury and comfort that the BMW dishes as standard. The Acura is priced very close to the BMW which leaves no room for it in the market.

2020 Acura MDX

BMW X5 vs Land Rover Discovery

The Land Rover does offer excellent luxury and comfort. It is much bigger in dimensions compared to the BMW. But the performance and the infotainment on the Rover are sluggish. Just based on these factors the BMW takes the upper hand on the Rover. They are priced close to one another and the choice would depend on whether one wants the extravagant luxury or performance. Go with the BMW if you want the later.

2020 Land Rover Discovery

BMW X5 vs Jaguar F-PACE

The Jaguar is a performance-oriented SUV and ti is evident from the performance numbers and the exterior design. But this takes a toll on the interior of the F-Pace. It does not match the luxury, comfort, and features of the BMW. Another fact to consider is that the BMW has better performance outputs than the Jag with a lower price-tag. There isn’t much left to comment as the winner is evident here.

2020 Jaguar F-PACE

2020 BMW X5 Final Verdict

The X5 is an SUV with multiple personalities that switch with the push of a button. It is a family car with the kids and groceries in the back going around the city for the everyday commute. Switch to the Sports or Sports Plus mode on the track or the freeway and feel the engine unleash the dragon out the exhausts propelling you straight ahead. All this with the extremely comfortable seats and a list of features as long as the constitution. So is it worth buying? Absolutely yes!
