Lifting up the image created by the word SUV, the new Audi Q8 has been launched bearing the highest numeric order in their lineup. Although, it is based on the same platform used by the Q7, but, this time it is slightly in a smaller proportion with no third row. Showcased as the flagship new SUV under the Audi brand, the Q8 brings along sharper curves and a bold yet elegant profile that very few other crossovers can match.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

In today's raging market we are now used to seeing SUVs flaunting all sorts of style and trend. One such trend that SUVs have adhered to recently, is the coupe-like sloping shape. Although the style of eliminating the third row of seats and compromising a bit with practicality. What we get is a stylish and sportier-looking SUV that stands apart in the crowd due to the same distinct look. The 2020 model does not have any major changes apart from the standard feature list as it was a fresh-looking SUV launched in 2019 and major updates will take some time to be implemented.

The Q8 surely has a USP of the way it looks, a long and wide body wrapped with an imposing Audi flair upfront and a sleek roofline finishing off the rear are enough ingredients to make it a head-turner. However, things get more exciting and luxurious when you step inside this flagship luxury SUV and you will be greeted with Audi’s best confluence of premium luxury and technology. At a price of around $70K, it is a direct rival for the BMW X6, Mercedes AMG GLE 43 Coupe and the very fresh Porsche Cayenne Coupe.

2020 Audi Q8 Features

Like most of the Audis, you get to choose from three trim levels in the Q8 i.e., the Premium, the Premium Plus, and the Prestige. Although all three trims come with the same 3.0 liter TFSI V6 engine. The main difference arises in the features list that they provide and that is the reason why the prices also vary. Prices for the three trims start at $68,200, $72,200 and $77,700 respectively. As of now, the Q8 is being offered with just a 3.0 Liter V6 that is standard across all trims. However, a more powerful SQ8 and the bonkers RS Q8 will be joining the party very soon.

We recommend

When you buy an SUV like the Q8, you would definitely want to stand out from the crowd.

Since the engine and other specs are the same in all the three trims and so is the performance you cannot expect anything more in these segments. However for fully loaded up with features you can always go for the Prestige trim because the Q8 gets as extravagant as it could be.

2020 Audi Q8 Engine and Performance

The 2020 Audi Q8 does not change the powerplant. It is equipped with the same 3.0-liter TFSI V6 engine which comes with a twin-scroll turbocharger and Audi's Valve shift system. This engine is capable of producing 335 hp and a torque of 369 lb.ft. The engine is also accompanied by a 48-volt hybrid assist system that aids the unnoticeable automatic start-up and stops Also, the response from the engine feels quite smooth and refined. Moreover, this V6 engine is paired up with an 8-speed automatic transmission and Audi's Quattro AWD system. With this AWD system, the Q8 seems to attain optimum grip and stability on all terrains

The transmission is smooth in its operation but is not as quick as the Porsche or the Beemer. But, it still feels adequate for the city as well as highway cruising. The powertrain seems very relaxed and composed, silently working in the background.

Power (hp @ rpm)

Torque (lb-ft @ rpm)

Mercedes GLE Coupe clear swipes all the competition in terms of horsepower figures and the same is applicable on torque figures too. While all three rivals provide same horsepower figures, the Q8 moves to the second position in terms of torque output of 369cu.ft by the V6 engine followed by Porsche and BMW.

The Audi Q8 attains a speed of 60 MPH in 5.6 seconds carrying along 5000 lbs of weight riding on a 3.0 liter V6 with 335 horses. With such a heavyweight, such quick acceleration sounds quite impressive. Although, the Q8 is tuned for more of a relaxed highway cruiser than a brisk starter. If you wish to keep the throttle depressed till the quarter-mile marker, then you will be looking at flat 14sec timing.

2020 Audi Q8 covers 0-60 in just 5.6 sec.

If talking about numbers, all the SUVs in our comparison comes under the 6sec time for the 0-60mph sprint. Going deeper into exact numbers, the GLE 43 AMG and the X6 top the list with their 5.1 and 5.2 seconds 0-60 mile run respectively. Better aerodynamics, slick transmission and a slightly lighter body than the Q8 make these two cars quicker than the Audi.

Ride and Handling

The Audi Q8 with its active damping suspension system and the Quattro AWD system feels quite confident around the corners. Ride quality is smooth and silent with minimal noise and vibrations inside the cabin. The Audi Q8 drives just like a luxury flagship SUV should. Moreover, its new driver assistance system is all set up to notify you about all your surroundings and thus keeps you and your co-commuters safe all the time. Available driving modes that retune the throttle response and adjust the adaptive dampers accordingly to the driving needs.

2020 Audi Q8 SUV Rear View

However, one drawback that could be taken into account is its electromechanical progressive steering system which takes away the feel of the coordination between the steering wheel and the wheels. Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system sends 60 percent of the power to the wheels on most occasions unless the front tires need more traction. This Quattro function reduces the nose-heaviness of the bulky Q8 and makes it much more nimble on the road. Riding on massive 22inch wheels may account for a few bumps reaching the cabin but that is something which comes with larger wheels and you have to live with it.

The Q8 comes equipped with ventilated disc brakes on both the front and the back. the 2020 Q8 is equipped with the largest set of discs among its rivals with the front brake size of 14.8 inches and the rear brake with 13.8 inches. While all the wheels are secured with ABS and other high tech gimmicks to maintain effective and straight-line braking. The pedal feels very firm with no signs of brake fade and it rewards the driver with maximum confidence even during worst braking circumstances.

Although the performance is not available, the Q8's brakes seem to be quite large when compared to the other competitors of the class and they are sure to perform. As no exact figures of other rivals are available but the Q8’s stopping distance of just 113 feet from 60-0 is simply outstanding for a vehicle this heavy.

2020 Audi Q8 Fuel Economy

Well the 2020 Audi Q8 looks quite thirsty. It has a combined fuel economy of 19 MPG with 17 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway. With these figures, the Q8 comes out to be the least economical SUV out of the lot.

The Fuel economy of the Q8 seems quite low when compared to the rivals in the line. However, the Fuel Economy of the GLE is also similar to the Q8. while the BMW X6 comes out to be the most efficient car of the lot.

2020 Audi Q8 Interior

The Interiors of the all-new Q8 are quite luxurious and comfortable enough to make you stay behind the wheel for a long time and is soaked in opulence just as it should. The dashboard is soaked in soft-touch leather and also gets contrast stitching that goes very well with the interiors. Once inside you’ll find the cabin to be nice and quiet. The noise insulation is superb and you can barely hear to the engine grunt.

2020 Audi Q8 SUV Rear Seats

The cabin is nicely laid out in typical Audi fashion. Focus has been laid out functionality and everything on the dash is placed ergonomically. The Audi Q5 can accommodate 5 full-grown adults quite comfortably. However, the top Prestige trim can be equipped with up to 18-way heated and ventilated power individual contour comfort front seats including power lumber, adjustment seat memory, and massage functions.

Featuring spacious interiors in regard to the competition. Upfront, you get a total head/shoulder/leg room of 39.4/57.7/41 inches respectively while at the rear you get a total head/shoulder/led room of 39/56.4/37.4 inches respectively.

Talking numbers, the Q8 is smaller inside in the front row compared to its rivals but, is better than the rivals when talking about rear seats. With Audi’s thoughtful interior placements and the chopped rear seats, the Q8 offers better rear-seat room than its rivals. Further enhancing the occupants’ comfort, the rear seats can also be slid back and forth by 5.1 inches for an even better legroom.

The virtual cockpit of the all-new Audi Q8 looks fully loaded up with many tech-savvy features seen in the latest generation of other Audi’s. Moreover, it also comes installed with Audi Connect and My Audi app to make you more connected to the car. A 10.1-inch upper screen regulates almost all the multimedia stuff along with navigation, while the lower 8.6-inch takes care of the climate controls and seat adjustments. Let's have a look at what all features it provides to you:

As the Q8 shares its wheelbase with the Q7, but its dynamic design incorporates a body length that is shorter than the Q7 even with the third row scraped off.

Cargo Volume (cu-ft) Rear seats folded

This is one segment where the Q8 clear swipes the rivals. Showcasing the best of cargo volume available to you, it gets even better with the rear seats folded down. A comparatively longer body than its rivals, coupled with a slightly unconservative coupe style with a small hump at the rear, gives the Q8 a certain edge over its rivals.

2020 Audi Q8 Exterior

The 2020 Audi Q8 is a coupe-styled SUV that the Audi waited so long to launch amongst its fleet in the market. Its body is very elegantly designed and looks quite extruding in size. It has a length of 196.6 inches, a width of 86.2 inches and a height of 67.2 inches. Also, it looks like the detailing has also been paid attention to very well.

Crafted with a distended front fender and a giant grille with vertical slats adds some anger to its face and the massive wheel arches housing the giant 20-inch wheels further accentuates its masculinity. With the optional wheel package, the rims can further be updated to 21 inches on the Premium and 22 on the Premium Plus and Prestige, respectively. The ‘S Line Plus’ also unlocks the ‘Black optic exterior package’ that brings along, a Singleframe grille mask, roof rails, side window surrounds and front/rear bumper trim. The balanced dimensions of the Audi Q8 give is a solid look and a commanding stance. The car is thoughtfully designed and retains the DNA of an old-school SUV and yet looks modern with the lines and the curves that flow across its body. Compared to the humble and conservative Q7, on which it is based, the Q8 is more sleek, stylish and aggressive. The Q8 also incorporates some familiar body lines, but the fact that it is 3.0 inches shorter in length to the Q7 integrated with a curvy roofline gives it a very distinctive persona.

With such extruding dimensions and such heavyweight, the Audi Q8 stands as the one of its kind amongst the competitors. Its coupe attire is not as compared to the X6, GLE Coupe and the Cayenne Coupe. It has a stylish and sturdy SUV look rather than the controversial full-blown Coupe SUV look which is due to a wide and muscular nose along with precisely carved curves.

2020 Audi Q8 Competition

2020 Audi Q8 vs BMW X6 sDrive40i

The trend of Coupe SUVs began with the BMW X6 and is indeed the strongest competitor to the Q8. With a top hand over the Q8 in every segment such as well built premium interior, a blasting engine, and a long list of standard features as well. It also features a better transmission than the Q8 and also provides impressive handling and ride quality. However, where it lags behind the Q8 is practicality and design. The Q8 has a much better road presence along with an airy interior and a better cargo bay.

2020 BMW X6 sDrive40i

2020 Audi Q8 vs Mercedes GLE Coupe

The GLE coupe is more like a hit and a miss composition. It sure provides a premium build quality, powerful engine, and extensive tech features. Where the Merc disappoints is the steering which provides less feedback and its handling. The powertrain in the GLE is not as enthusiastic as the Q8 and its weight is more evident than the Q8 around corners. Overall, the Q8 handles better with more driveability, along with better looks and enhanced interior space. Finally it has a much bigger cargo area than the Merc.

2020 Mercedes GLE Coupe

2020 Audi Q8 vs Porsche Cayenne Coupe

The latest contender to enter this segment with some seriousness is the Porsche Cayenne coupe. Carrying the Porsche’s heritage, no doubt it has a top-notch build quality and a peppier engine. As the Q8’s is more oriented towards comfort, the Cayenne Coupe is more dynamic and performance-oriented. Though the Porsche Cayenne has been in the market for a long time, with an all-new generation, the stakes of the market are high. However the Q8 faces a similar Challenge with the Cayenne as it has an upper hand here in terms of price as it is little cheaper than the Q8. Still being a better performer adds up as an advantage. Compared to the Q8, the Cayenne Coupe is more fun to drive machine with its energetic powertrain and agile handling. However, the Q8 aces ahead of the Porsche in terms of exterior design and practicality.

2020 Porsche Cayenne Coupe

2020 Audi Q8 Final Verdict

Audi introduced the Q8 for the first time after such a long gap. But they have built it in such a way that it has taken down most of its rivals with its entry. It is quite technologically advanced, filled up with luxurious interiors and is quite a performer in the class. But still, it falls back due to the long-standing rivals which offer the same or in some cases a better option at a more economical price. the Q8 is the one where your search should end if you are looking for a luxury SUV with a very high sense of style, opulence, and comfort,
