A performance-oriented luxury sedan couldn’t go any better than the Alfa Romeo Giulia. An aerodynamic body, powerful engine, sport-tuned mechanics, and precise handling have been core attributes of this beautiful Italian sedan. What adds to its valor is the available Ferrari derived V6 engine and its gorgeous silhouette for sure. No wonder, right from its launch in 2017, the Alfa Romeo Giulia has been a benchmark of the performance in the high-performance luxury sport sedan segment, manufactured by the Italian automaker Alfa Romeo in 1965. It’s earlier model was itself an amazing machine due to its Ferrari-derived twin-turbo V6 engine with outstanding chassis and suspension tuning

Since then not much has changed with the Giulia and the present 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia is pretty much the same car that was launched back in 2017. Well, that's only a good thing though. However, Alfa Romeo is very soon going to unveil the 2021 Giulia which should hit the stores by the end of this year. No official confirmations but there are a bunch of interesting pieces doing the rounds for the upcoming new Giulia.  What we have been assured though, is that we will be getting even more ferocious versions of the Giulia for 2021. Without doing a do let's have a quick look at the probable promises, the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia seems to make.

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Features

The 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia should ideally follow the same trim segmentation as the outgoing version with 5 different configurations to choose from, and each model can further be had in two drivetrains – RWD and AWD – which sees a $2000 difference between them. Starting from $38,195 for the base Giulia RWD sedan, all trims are powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder powertrain mated to 8-speed automatic transmission. While there is no change in the mechanicals, the interiors will witness the addition of some updated interior bits and improved materials in the cabin,

The top two trims of the Giulia are expected to carry a similar price tag. While the TI Lusso adds a layer of luxury and comfort, the TI Sport, as the name suggests, takes things into a sporty direction, aesthetically speaking. At the sedan’s base price, the plethora of features are offered for a reasonable price, different packages at a cost are offered to add more features to the customers taste.

Expected Price and Release Date of the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia

The regular Giulia is supposed to carry pretty much the same price tag as the outgoing version but the main highlight for the Giulia lineup has to be the introduction of the GTA and GTAm high-performance models.

There is no official announcement regarding the release price of GTA and GTAm but if you are interested be prepared to shell around $100,000. With the cheque prepared you also need to respond swiftly as only 500 units would be launched on its 110 anniversary i.e 24 June. However, the commencement of bookings and deliveries still remains a question though.

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Engine and Performance

While the regular 2021 Giulia and Giulia Quadrifoglia should stack up, as usual, the party trick is the new models for 2021 though. The 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA and GTAm carry the familiar 2.9-liter turbo V6, but with a twist. Compared to the 505 hp in the Giulia Quadrifoglio, the same engine in both the new GTA’s makes 540 hp but the standard Guilia with its 280 horsepower Inline-4 is more than enough to make those daily commutes an enjoyable affair.

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia comes with a 2.0L Turbocharged Inline-4

Though both the new Giulias have the same power output, they are separated by their specific componentry. The 8-speed automatic transmission remains constant and still does a good job of economy and performance. The Giulia continues to be offered in both RWD as well as AWD specification and the 2-litre inline-4 manages to put the power down really well. The AWD version is definitely quicker off the line but it might not be as fun to drive as the RWD.

While the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA and GTAm might not be as powerful as its closest rivals, it's a no performance-compromiser at all. The GTA’s over the 800-lbs lighter body than the Mercedes-AMG E63 S and BMW M5, along with shorter proportions is every enthusiast's wild desire. Weight saving carbon-fiber splitter and diffuser along with wider tracks, ensure that the Giulia GTA could tame any sports car on the track.

How quick is the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia?

The 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia range will be offered with 2 engines in 3 different states of tune, making it an attractive option for a wide demographic. The baseline 2.0L motor under the hood is mated with the 8-speed automatic transmission which is capable of propelling the Alfa Romeo Giulia from naught to 60 mph in 5.5s while sprinting the quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds. Speaking of the transmission, in the Natural mode, the gearbox thinks a little too much to kick down even when the accelerator is slammed hard and it gets even worse in the Advanced Efficiency mode. Things take a quick turn in the Dynamic mode though.

The upcoming Giulia GTA should be a lot faster than the outgoing Quadrifoglio which with its upgraded aero and 540 hp motor is capable of breaching the 60 mph barrier from a standstill in just 3.6 seconds which 0.2 seconds faster than the 505 hp Quadrifoglio.

How well does the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia brake?

The standard 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia is expected to carry the same 13” rotor diameters fitted in the 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia, they stop the 3500-pound sedan from 60 to a standstill in 124 feet – an average effort. The brake feel is precise and responsive, as you would expect from a sports sedan.

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia gets 13-inch brake rotors

The TI Sport variant gets bigger 19-inch wheels that further enhance this experience and encourage spirited driving due to good feedback from the brakes but the low profile tires that come with the 19-inch rims, might not be the best in terms of offering sheer grip. A tyre upgrade might just be the difference between good and excellent handling sedan.

Taking 153 feet to come to standstill from 70 mph is relatively a laudable performance by the Mercedes C300, while the Stinger does not really impress with its 185 feet of stopping distance. Being the heaviest in the segment, there is only so much the Kia can do. However, the Jaguar XE is among the worst performers even after weighing the least in this competition. The Giulia GTA is expected to get much beefier carbon-ceramic brakes on all four corners however its too early to comment about the specifications of the setup.

How well does the 2021 Alfa Romeo Gulia Handle?

The Guila gets a whole bunch of drive modes that effectively alter the driving dynamics of the vehicle depending on the condition of the tarmac. The natural mode can be best suited for calm, casual cruising or when stuck behind that pesky traffic, while Dynamic firms the driving dynamics and creates a more responsive sedan with the least interference from the safety systems. However modest the mode, the sedan is spirited, responsive, and sharp.

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia offers balanced and predictable handling

Limited body roll paves way for precise and keen cornering. The rear-wheel driven sedan handles amazingly well. Centered and poised, take it for a spin, and don’t be surprised about the inadvertent grin that the Giulia would bring to your face.

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Fuel Economy

We don't think that anyone going for a pure enthusiast car like the Giulia would ever turn around its economy. For numbers though, the 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio with the 2.9-liter Twin-Turbo V6 Gas and returns 20 mpg combined, which is surprisingly better than its rivals. However, that is not the same for its driving range. Thanks to its small 15.3-gallon fuel tank.  for the class. Though the new 2021 Giulia GTA gets a power bump, its 220 lbs shaved weight should fairly compensate for the extra power’s diet.

Since the dynamics of the 2021 Giulia GTA  has also been tweaked for enhanced aerodynamics, that too should aid up to its efficiency. Interestingly enough, it seems that the adrenaline-inducing makeover should barely make a difference in its efficiency. The 2021 Giulia GTA should offer similar mpg figures as the 2020 Giulia Quadrifoglio. A smaller engine, shorter dimensions, and lighter body do help the Giulia in attaining an efficiency far better than its rivals, which is no surprise either.

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Interior

Well, on the inside of the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA series, things remain mostly familiar to the present 2020 Giulia. However, with the enraged fury at its core, the interior has been reciprocatively sprinkled with sporty decorations. There is generous Alcantara along with some contrast badging and red accents as well. Rest everything remains mostly identical.

Opt for the GTA and you would still have four-passenger seats but the GTAm eliminates the rear-bench for some driver and safety gear. In place of sets, the rear space has housings for keeping helmets and fire extinguishers. The m also gets pull-straps instead of door handles and the door panels have been simplified as well. The front-seats in the GTAm are carbon-shelled racing units and they are also accompanied by a roll-bar and six-point harnesses.

While there are a lot of sporty touches in the upcoming 2021 Alfa Romeo GTA for sure which adds a far more enthusiastic-zing as compared to its rivals. With hints of some slight tweak in dimensions, we are yet to come across the actual passenger room which the upcoming model could offer. However, we do assume that the interior space in the 2021 Giulia GTA would be identical to that of its 2020 model. Though it is not quite as roomy as its rivals, it is also not too cramped for taller occupants either.

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia gets an updated Infotainment System

Some of the key interior features include:

  • Optional Alcantara upholstery

In the upcoming model, we hope the infotainment would be updated with new features. We do expect some updates in the infotainment user-interface though. We could only wait to see what's up for grabs, once it's finally unveiled.

  • 8-Speaker Audio System

How much cargo can the 2021 Alfa Romeo Gulia carry?

The boot space in the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia continues to be sub-par in this compact sports sedan segment. Practicality takes a hit when you find a meager 12 cubic feet of volume in the back. However, things do get eased a bit with the one-touch split-folding rear seats with some in-cabin hooks. A powered-tailgate also adds to the same.

The trunk lid lifts high, but the opening is pretty narrow and disappointing. Loading/Unloading factor might get discomforting for some. Genesis G90 share the lowest space in the trunk when compared to their rivals while the Kia Stinger has an immense 23.3 cubic feet of space, making it the segment leader.

What are the other storage spaces inside?

The Giulia is poorly equipped in terms of cabin storage. The glove compartment is adequate but from there on all other storage is sub-par. The center console does open up for some storage but its way smaller than its competitors from Mercedes and Hyundai, the same goes for the door pockets. There is some space to store mobile phones and other knick-knacks under the climate control dials but overall, it is not very practical.

The 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia is one of the best-looking sedans that one can get right now. We are pretty familiar by now with the jaw-dropping silhouette of the 2020 Giulia, its 2021 power-siblings add a bit more drama to its exterior flare.  The 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA and GTAm endorse a lot more weight-saving components for optimum performance.

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia adds Italian flair to the regular old sedan

While the carbon-fiber hood is similar to the existing Quadrifoglio, the driveshaft for the 2021 GTA’s is wrapped in carbon-fiber as well. The front and rear fenders along with the wider and lower front bumper also feature extensive use of carbon-fiber now. With power as the core intent, you do know that the Giulia QF and now the two GTA’s even have aluminum engine blocks. Walking further down the line, the side and rear windows are composed of lightweight Lexan glass. New for 2021 is the 20’ inch 10-spoke wheels swapping the earlier 17’-inches.

Whatever be the purpose and intent, the Giulia has always stood out among any car that tries to chase it down. The 2021 Giulia GTA and GTAm further elevate its badass appeal on the road. A lower body, wider track, larger tires, and plentiful carbon-fiber inserts mean sheer business. Compared to its rather traditional rivals, the Giulia has always looked meaner, aggressive yet stylish at the very same time.

Some of the key exterior features of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Include:

  • 17” aluminum 10-spoked wheels
  • Rain-Sensitive Windshield Wipers
  • Alfa Romeo traditional triangular-grille
  • Tinted Windshield Glass
  • Dual Chrome Exhaust Tips

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Safety

With extreme potent and power, the Alfa Romeo and Giulia also acknowledge passenger safety with its brilliant safety standards. The current 2020 Giulia does have all the latest safety gadgets, but with more power, the 2021 Giulia GTA further pushes down the safety lane. We are not completely assured now about its overall safety but the initial hints are soothing enough nonetheless.

A rear-wing, splitter, and fire-extinguishers, over the supreme safety vault, seem strong enough to pull it out of most circumstances unscathed. Though the Giulia received an overall “good” evaluation from IIHS in 2020, we certainly have our hopes high for 2021. Some of the notable safety features of the 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia are listed below:

Some of the key safety features found onboard the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia include:

  • Anti-Slip Regulation / Torque Control
  • Traction Control
  • Dual Advanced Front Airbags
  • Remote Keyless Entry
  • Front Seatbelt with Dual Pretensioner
  • LATCH Ready Child Seat Anchor System
  • Rear Back-Up Camera

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Competition

Alfa Romeo Giulia vs Infiniti Q50

In a nutshell, the Infiniti Q50 is mostly on the flipside of what the Alfa Romeo Giulia is – contrasting powertrain, robust interior quality, spacious cabin, and comfortable ride. In all, while the Giulia is enthusiast-centered sedan, the Infiniti Q50 caters towards practicality. It bows down to the passengers while the Giulia bows down to its driver alone. Moreover, the Japanese sedan packs an enormous boot space with a decent fuel economy, while its Italian rival is a spirited luxury sports car with little practicality in its mind. At a difference of almost 5 grand, you have two options based on your priority. Pragmatic or Excitement? Your call.

2021 Infiniti Q50

Alfa Romeo vs Mercedes C300

While both the sedans feature powerful engines, the Mercedes C300 still falls behind in aspects the Alfa Romeo Giulia inches ahead. The Italian is a sporty, driver-focused sedan whilethe Merc C300 is tuned towards entry-level comfort and luxury. As spirited-driving goes, it is no surprise that the Mercedes stands no chance against the Alfa Romeo while feature-wise the Benz takes the crown here. So what would you prefer - opulence and comfort, or performance and enthusiasm?
